Re: Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

Jill the drain came out last night, they didn't turn up during the day! She tried to wear a bra today, a bit sore though. We have an appointment with the fertility clinic at St Barts on Thursday. Personally I think it's too far to travel and the tube will be horrible for her x

Re: Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

I have given up a lot since my diagnosis. But I cant give up everything. Jill is right a little bit of what you fancy. If you restrict your self too much you will only beat yourself up if you set your standards too high. Also if any of you have to go through chemo the nhs leaflet tells you to stock up on easy comfort foods. There has to be some treats with this diagnosisn:) xxx

My feeling is that eating healthily is always a good thing, but a little bit of what you fancy cheers you up (which is also good for your immune system) and this is difficult and miserable enough without depriving yourself of things you enjoy.

Nikki's already said she won't give up everything, but if we can eat healthier with more fruit, veg and spices it can't do any harm x

Re: Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

Hi everyone I'm just jumping in on this a bit too as since diagnoses have completely changed what I eat! I have given up dairy gluten sugar and alcohol. I won't eat anything processed anymore and only eat organic fruit and veg and organic chicken and fish. I'm having smoothies from the bullet all day too. It might not be doing much but I do feel better for doing something. I also read about the turmeric. I'm reading a really interesting book called your life in your hands and it focuses a lot on the western diet contributing to cancer xx

I'm looking at my weight too, pity I'm just looking at it! Really must take it in hand. Did very well when I was a week on nil by mouth, lol, but that's a bit drastic now I think! Husband is a feeder unfortunately but then I'm easily tempted. As Oscar Wilde said (I think) 'I can resist anything except temptation'.

That's interesting Francine as I was vit D deficient a year or so before diagnosis. Been taking it for a while now. Yes it's a minefield isn't it. but we have to try help ourselves. Looking at my weight too. x

Re: Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

Apparently it's D3 she needs to take specifically. Not D2. Dosage suggestions are a bit varied but taking too much can cause problems with excessive calcium absorption, which can overload the kidneys and leach it from the bones. Still looking in to that one! What would we do without Dr Google🔍🔍

Re: Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

Francine, let me know if a simple vitamin D tablet is safe for her to take. Need to see about the turmeric supplement, or just use it to make a soup she can drink in a mug. I don't eat loads of veg, but I've always been a big fruit eater. Where as Nikki's never really eaten either, I'm giving her nutri bullet shakes now though 🙂 She was upset as they hadn't been, so I called the district nurses. She's so relieved to have it out and healed well x

Re: Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

Heh Barry, you may have new career as a scientific researcher! I used to work for the Medical Research Council so have always been very interested in these sorts of studies. It's true that curcumin has powerful anti inflammatory and healing properties. A glass of warm milk with a small teaspoon of turmeric in it is very good for ache and pains. You can buy the capsules in health stores but I love curries so just add it to those. Also there is a lot of evidence that Vitamin D is a potent anti cancer substance. Apparently some research from the State University of New York showed that 70% of women with breast cancer are vitamin D deficient. I'm going to look into this and safe levels to take as a supplement. You have to be careful as some of these 'natural' substances can be bad for you if not taken at the right level and they can interact with other drugs. Glad to hear Nikki has had her drain removed, bet she's a lot more comfortable. As her resident dietician, don't forget to include some choccies! X Francine

Re: Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

Well that is good news, TC...hopefully more will follow tomorrow. Do you get told straight away or do they roll out the dreaded 'wait for results' ?

Barry, has Nikki had her drains taken out yet?

Its good they're doing research into turmeric, but the Eastern diet must differ in many ways, I wonder why turmeric was the focus of the research? I would like to be sure that any supplements or dietary changes wouldn't make things worse before starting anything. It's so tricky to know what to do..I was told by my breast care nurse that I should try get my BMI down as ladies "tend to do better" if they are not too overweight. Just when I really wanted to comfort eat!! But I have to give it my best shot, so diet it is!

Re: Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

No not told Dr but I will mention it. What made me start was recent reports similar to what you have posted. It's a spice I could and do eat in my diet anyway so thought I would buy the capsules. Hey who knows why some of us get this and others don't...but it's much much lower in eastern countries were it's a huge part of their diet which is why it wasinvestigated in the first place x

Inhibits Cancer Cell Growth and Metastases

Epidemiological studies have linked the frequent use of turmeric to lower rates of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer; laboratory experiments have shown curcumin can prevent tumors from forming; and research conducted at the University of Texas suggests that even when breast cancer is already present, curcumin can help slow the spread of breast cancer cells to the lungs in mice.

In this study, published in Biochemical Pharmacology (September 2005), human breast cancer cells were injected into mice, and the resulting tumors removed to simulate a mastectomy.

The mice were then divided into four groups. One group received no further treatment and served as a control. A second group was given the cancer drug paclitaxel (Taxol); the third got curcumin, and the fourth was given both Taxol and curcumin.

After five weeks, only half the mice in the curcumin-only group and just 22% of those in the curcumin plus Taxol group had evidence of breast cancer that had spread to the lungs.

But 75% of the mice that got Taxol alone and 95% of the control group developed lung tumours.

How did curcumin help? "Curcumin acts against transcription factors, which are like a master switch," said lead researcher, Bharat Aggarwal. "Transcription factors regulate all the genes needed for tumors to form. When we turn them off, we shut down some genes that are involved in the growth and invasion of cancer cells."

In another laboratory study of human non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cells published inBiochemical Pharmacology (September 2005), University of Texas researchers showed that curcumin inhibits the activation of NF-kappaB, a regulatory molecule that signals genes to produce a slew of inflammatory molecules (including TNF, COX-2 and IL-6) that promote cancer cell growth. In addition, curcumin was found to suppress cancer cell proliferation and to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis (cell suicide) in the lung cancer cells. Early phase I clinical trials at the University of Texas are now also looking into curcumin's chemopreventive and therapeutic properties against multiple myeloma and pancreatic cancer, and other research groups are investigating curcumin's ability to prevent oral cancer

Re: Just diagnosed and wanting to talk to people who understand

Hmmm

Hormone-sensitive condition such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids: Turmeric contains a chemical called curcumin, which might act like the hormone estrogen. In theory, turmeric might make hormone-sensitive conditions worse. However, some research shows that turmeric reduces the effects of estrogen in some hormone-sensitive cancer cells. Therefore, turmeric might have beneficial effects on hormone-sensitive conditions. Until more is known, use cautiously if you have a condition that might be made worse by exposure to hormones.

Morning ladies, I say stay strong to all of you. The tears and fears don't stop, they are still lurking in the background but just don't arise so often. I'm sure everyone will fight it and put our faith in the doctors x

Hardly any fluid is being drained, so fingers crossed the nurse will remove it tomorrow. Hopefully she'll find sleeping and moving around a little easier x
