Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Hi KateDay, I’m having to wait 4 weeks for my results too. Had my 2 Lymph nodes with a mastectomy and reconstruction implant. My sisters a Dr in Oz and she just can’t believe how long we have to wait.
My urine went blue for a few times. Went quickly. I’m not very blue as they did say it could leave my
Breast arms veins very blue but so far it is just blue in my armpit.
Keep us upto date on your progress xx Alex xx

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

JacqB that’s awful and yes it’s torture, the Ozzie Doctors just can’t believe it. I suffer from mental health and anxiety before the cancer so you can imagine what it’s doing to me now!!

I’ve just found a lady on this site, recommended by another lady for prosthetic nipples. They look amazing on her website. https://www.areolae.co.uk/ Apparently you can wear them swimming and they don’t come off. She’s a lovely lady and she’s had a bilateral mascectomy. I know it’s not for everyone but it’s made me very happy as I was very upset at losing mine.

How’s your shape coming along. It will be at least 4 weeks before it starts to take shape xxx

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Good morning all
I had WLE and sentinel lymph removal on the tenth
I found it very interesting reading this thread
Firstly the wait for results seems to differ quite a lot
I have a four week wait others seem to only have two , or then get a call to say they are not back
Am I right in thing this is where they say he it and grade it so on so fourth
Now I have had minimum pain just regular paracetomol or ibruprofen but what I’m also struggling with is tiredness
I went for a short walk yesterday and they slept for nearly two hours
This isn’t like me I’m normally a very busy person , will this feeling shift soon
And did anyone else not have any affects after the dye , I didn’t have blue skin or urine x

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

@Xela
Thanks for the hug 🤗 very much appreciated. With regard to waiting for results, we were actually on our way to the hospital on Thursday when they phoned to say the results weren’t in and the appointment would be delayed by a week, it’s mental torture. I’d be more than happy to be told over the phone with a planning appointment to follow.
All the best for the 24th Chocxie

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Chocxie good to hear from you. It’s weird how life is, we get told we’ve the big C and then go and wish our life away, so that we can get to surgery and our plans quicker 🙄. I put my life on hold but then wanted the day of my surgery to be here as soon as possible. Well it’s surgery over but won’t get results for 4 weeks. My sister tells her fellow Doctors in Oz how long in the UK we have to wait for our results,
they can’t believe it. They say how can someone mentally wait that long, It’s cruel. It’s the NHS bloody red tape and all the regulations they have to go through. My sister said she’d like to do a survey on how many people would be happy to receive their results over the phone. They obviously wouldn’t be able to give us a plan but at least we’d know. We lost my dad to prostate cancer 18 months ago and we were constantly in limbo waiting for results etc. It’s not just hard for us, it’s terrible on our loved ones too.

Chocxie Keep in touch and keep us up to date with everything Alex

Hi, sorry to take so long to come back. Glad to see that Alex and Willow are post surgery and doing well.
Well, my HER2 result finally came back as negative, so I am straight to surgery (left mastectomy) on 24th. Had a long chat with BCN on Friday and trying to relax and enjoy the weekend. I have a full on week at work to get through before the big day, but just want it to be here and get on with it now.

Hi Susan
Welcome the the September thread.
I had the same op as you on the 3rd and have been very tearful today. I’m devastated at the shape of my boob and really struggling to be positive.
I hope you are doing ok and look forward to hearing more from you.
All best wishes

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Hi I had WLE on 4 September with node clearance and will go back on Thursday 20 September for my results. On the whole I have recovered well and it is only in recent days that I have felt very emotional. I read the Victoria Derbyshire book and watched some of her U-Tube video clips which seemed to help. Hope to connect with others with September surgery and share feelings and experiences.

MrsLet. Yep my big sis is a GP too and she is a great calming influence. It’s lovely that your friend spent 2 weeks after your op, what an Angel. I’m sorry you’re feeling down today. I’m still on the painkillers so I’m a bit spaced. Being recently on a General Aneasthtic can bring you down. After all the highs of the drugs and reality kicking in can certainly lower your mood. We just have to keep fighting for our normal. A lot easier said than done. Hope you manage to have a good weekend xxx

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Gals you have your sister with you Alex. My best friend came to stay when I got out, she’s a GP, does help you relax a little. So sorry to hear of your experience though.

Pleased to hear you’re doing ok Willowherb, remember to take it easy.

I’m feeling a little miserable today, a bit woe is me. Boobs looking distinctly different and limited movement and soreness is getting me down, kind of wishing I’d gone flat :-(. I keep having to remind myself that I’m 10 days post op and they moved a muscle! Taking it easy with a little cross stitch.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Xx

Thanks JacqsB already having a ball. She cooked me Eggs Royale for brunch delicious and a star. She’s a v healthy eater so having high protein meals made for me xx

Hi Alex

I had my surgery on 20th August but I've just been reading this thread and I noticed you mentioned East Yorkshire - is that where you live?  I live in East Yorkshire and was wondering if you had your surgery in the same hospital as me.

@willowherb, good to hear that you are home and comfortable. Rest up and take it easy.
We are oiling the decking this weekend. I say we but in honesty I will be Captain PoInt and my dear OH will be my minion. Oh the power! 😊

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Well I am done and came home yesterday even8ng as expected.

Long day starting with the wire insertion which was a bit of a faff as the doctor couldn't find the tumour and so had to find it with stereoscopic mammogram.

Onto the radioactive injection which I had heard could be a little interesting. But due to the local anaesthetic for the wire I did not feel a thing!

Then to the ward which was for all day case surgeries. Ended up sitt8ng in a nice chatty group of ladies, not all cancer, and the time passed nicely. Typically i was last to go down . Had been fasting since midnight so was rumbling noisily by 3pm.  No water since 7 but hospital allowed small 50mls very hour, so not too bad on the water front.

Ok was to remove 5 mm invasive ductal lump grade 2ish and sentinel node biopsy. Took about 45 mins .  Bit of shabby pain in recovery round my nipple but given pain relief there and on the ward which worked. 2 hours later after 2 mugs of tea, sarnies and biscuits I was home. Banana and cereal and yet more tea while watching the tennis, before codeine before bed just in case.

Slept well in the other side. No extra pillows used, but woke at 2 and didnt get back to sleep for a couple of hours.

Now little shabby pains in breast, but nothing else. However, peculiarly, apart from a little pins and needles in my fingers at times I have had NO pain and stiffness in shoulder or biopsy site. Have full range of movemen5 and so have had to try to remember not to use the arm too much. But I woke up in my usual position with arm above my head!, opened car door, reached for plate in kitchen.

Feel a little spaced at times. Smurf blue patches on breast and wee definately Harpic like!

So pleased it's all over. Staff at hospital all lovely. 2 weeks from diagnosis to op. Now 2 weeks to results. Hate the waiting game, but so far so good.

Thanks to all for support.  Appreciated so much . Good luck to others who are having ops in September xx

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Thanks JacqB. The breast ward is a huge long corridor with reception in the middle. All private rooms and Ensuite. I believe all the other breast ladies were on the other side to me, as we all went down to Nuclear together and they were the opposite end. I’ve heard they stick people in that ward, when they haven’t got room in the other part of the hospital. So there was a lot of men on my side. I remember being on the other side last time. Just one of those things, my surgeon did get me in very quickly. Hope you’re having a good day and all the ladies too. My sister is arriving in the next half an hour teavelled from Brisbane, so going to have a great 2 weeks. Plus she’s a Dr and is very calming!! Xxx

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

MrsLet just got home. They wouldn’t let me take it them off. Not had a great experience this time. Didn’t see a Nurse until gone 12pm yesterday. Just ran through all the paperwork gave me a gown that was ripped. This morning heard them checking people in - gave them instructions how to do everything in the room. What would be happening etc so I was 😡. Then my consultant comes in this morning and checks everything, I was following him out the room asking questions, apparently he was heading a meeting 😡. So rang my breast care nurses very upset, left a message. Then in walks one of my consultants team, thank god. Answered my questions. I know they said it went well recovery but wanted reassurance that they hadn’t opened me up and it was worse that they thought. She said it was exactly how they expected. I have scattered v small tumours. They only took 2 Lymph’s so I’m not that sore in my armpit. Then BCN called me back and was concerned about me.
told her but said I’d had no sleep and grumpy. She wanted me to tell the head nurse on the Ward what happened but they hardly lifter their heads to say goodbye. I had a marvellous time, last time. Honestly I had to keep reminding the nurses of what to do 🙄. I was supposed to have my blood pressure taken before I left. Asked them 5 times and gave up! My night staff were great and she was Bank nursing. Anyway off to clinic on Monday and things will be said!

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

So sorry to hear you’re waiting again Jacq 😢 and that you’re not happy with your shape, but Alex speaks a lot of sense, do give it time. I was feeling pretty low about my shape this morning as the uplifted one doesn’t feel very uplifted now the swelling has reduced and the food feels massive and rock hard. I was regretting having a recon, but I gave myself a good talking to and will try not to judge for 6 months .... it’s coming up to baggy jumper season so from the outside all will be fine whilst I wait for it to settle. I really hope all is ok for you, it is still early days.

Glad you’re ok Alex, I made them take that machine off me overnight for a few hours - it drove me insane and was very hot!! X

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Fingers crossed it will move into shape as mine did.
Yes I remember the square boob. You have big ridges? As the tissue softens it will start moving into a much softer shape. This is the one and only time
you want Gravity to work on your breasts. 🤗 Oh that’s so bloody unfair. Yes I did read your earlier posts, sorry only had op today and full of
Morphine. I was given so many options that should be so for you. Good luck with saving the money! We all deserve the same. Raise A go fund me page. Anything would be a help. I’m sure some of the girlies on here would try and help you out xxx Alex xxx

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Hi Xela
Thank you for your response. I know it’s early days and I am trying not to get too wound up about my square boob. Sadly because I live in Somerset they will leave me like this as there is no funding for balancing surgery under any circumstances 😠 My surgeon explained this at the very beginning. What’s annoying is that he is the same surgeon I will have to pay to reduce my other boob. It’s a Postcode lottery so I’m saving my pennies for a private op sometime next year.

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Hi JackB, after my reduction I was bitterly disappointed, it looked like I had been hacked at but it was far far too early to judge. There is extra fluid,
the tissue has to fall into place, that takes time to shape. I rang the breast nurses and cried, I looked like something had taken a big bite out of me. But it settled down very quickly and I ended up with great breasts. 10 years later people would ask if they were real. I know it’s Little consolation but it’s far too early to judge. If you’re not happy they won’t leave you like that. Yes we’re happy to be alive but we’re women and to some of us our boobs are very special. I’ve always had boobs and I understand totally how you feel. It’s our confidence. Big hugs

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Hi September Ladies
So I was supposed to receive my post surgery results today but had a phone call while on route to hospital to say that the results hadn’t come through and my appointment was cancelled. I now have to wait another week 😞 Consoled myself with pizza and Frascati at Zizzi with my darling husband which was lovely. The nurse said I could remove my dressIngs at home so I did and I have to say that I am really disappointed with the shape of what’s left of my boob. I know the goal is to keep me alive but I thought there might be some attempt to leave me with something vaguely boob shaped. I’m trying to be philosophical about it but struggling. Thinking now that I should have had the full MX. Sorry my post is a bit of a downer but I can’t discuss this stuff anywhere else. Sending healing hugs and best wishes to everyone. I look forward to hearing how you are all doing with surgeries and recovery.

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Good luck today Xela, hope to hear from you soon.

Hello Maggie, hope you’re ok. I was diagnosed on 11th July and had my op on 3rd September, partly my choice as I wanted to go on holiday, but it is quite a time for the tension to build.

At 47 I’d never had a general anaesthetic or surgery bar a mole removal, so I was pretty scared. This group has been very supportive and all the medical professionals I’ve come across have been great too, I hope you’re as well looked after. Make sure you have one or two good friends on hand to pop in, they’re the best medicine. I did feel terribly down on day 3 and 4 and I can’t put my finger on why, I likened it to the baby blues, but I guess surgery is going to do that to you. Take one day at a time and look after yourself.

It’s a shame the reduction isn’t happening at the same time, but I suspect you’ll get a different and possibly better result by waiting as the first one will have settled and they’ll be able to see what it looks like. I had an enlargement at the same time as my mastectomy and I look in the mirror at the moment wondering if they will ever be similar again.

Good luck and do let us know how you get on. Big hugs xxx

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Willowherb. My surgery is tomorrow 13th. Mine is quite small too but there’s more than one, definitely 2 and maybe 3. Was supposed to have lumpectomy last week but now mascectomy with reconstruction implant. I had an MRI but not CT. im going for my my sentinel node injection at 10.30 am so god knows what time i’ll be in Theatre. Good luck on Friday and let us know how you get on.

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Hi Ladies,

Thought I would join this thread as I’m having surgery next Wednesday (21st). I’ve had such a long wait for surgery since getting diagnosed on Friday 20th July. I was originally meant to get an Lyumpectomy and a reduction on both breasts. On 8th August I went for an MRI and it presented an abnormality in my right breast. Very long story short as I have dence breasts the clip they inserted bounced back and no where near the little brut! I’m getting another MRI on Friday (14th - this will be my 3rd) for an MRI coil guided biopsy. Unfortunately the decision was made I will not get my right breast reduction at this time due to them not knowing what this thing is. It could take 6mnoths for symmetry.I’m heartbroken, I really don’t want to go through this again and also having one breast smaller than the other.

I’m only 42 and like everyone else on here my world has been turned upside down.

I’m really worried about surgery, the drains and how I’m going to feel emotionally after it. This cancer business sucks!

I have found so much comfort, support and just lovely women on this forum.

Sending Hugs
Maggie

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

So been for the follow up tonight, drains have been removed, dressings off and they’re happy for me to now lift my elbows above my shoulders so I can have a shower and wash my hair ... yay!!!

Luckily he also had my results which confirm DCIS, no invasion, nodes clear, lymph clear and margins clear. They got all of it :-). Big relief.

Time to focus on the healing and movement now, my brain needs to learn that this muscle has moved from my back to my front 😱

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Hello all

I am going in on Friday (14) morning for  a wire insertion and dye injection before the Sentinel Node Biopsy and lumpectomy later that morning.

As I said on another forum here, I am in a bit of a funk. Scared of the op but wanting rid of the little blighter that has ruined my Summer.

I am also concerned for the future - too may what ifs going round in my head at 3am.

My lump is tiny (abt 5mm) and is stage2/3 . The nodes seemd to be clear on the scan.

Some folk here have been for CT and MRI scans prior to surgery , but that has not been mentioned to me.

Hopefully they will take it all away and the nodes will be clear - the waiting for results is awful!

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Good evening Lovely Ladies,
Surgery Thursday, but admission tomorrow at 4pm.
To say I am nervous is an understatement, but a g&t has hit the spot, hoping for a decent sleep, but hey if I don't, then Thursday under anaesthetic for most of the day will be welcome.
I am a newbie at all this, except for the core biopsy and the SLNB. I am comforted by the wealth of knowledge and information I am reading on here. I know for sure I will be popping on here for advice and reassurance.
My Team at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire are lovely, have made me feel comfortable so far, are any of you Lovely Ladies from this area?
Xela thanks for your reply, and I wish you well for your surgery on Thursday too, make sure you enjoy your family meal. I look forward to hearing your progress.

Hi Luthien and Michelle21, thanks so much for your replies, they have helped a great deal. I still don't have the result to the test, I'm hoping it may be in tomorrow. Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

Had my last drain removed today, it feels great not being attached to anything now. Being able to have a shower freely.
It's exactly 7 days ago since I had a LD flap, still have quite a bit of fluid in that area. As I have all nodes taken out it will take a long time to get reabsorbed I guess. It does feel uncomfortable. I have a follow up appointment on Friday and hope they will be able to drain some odd that fluid. Has anybody else have the same problem and how long did it take for the fluid to reduce?

JacqB so wonderful to hear that you’re up and about doing well. Mmm yummy chilli sounds great as Autum is drawing in. I’m warning my family about looking a terribl grey after my op, due to the blue dye injection for the nodes. Warned my boys 12 & 15, I could look like a Zombie 🧟‍♀️,
they can’t wait to see me now!! The Sister I had a pre-op with today, told me that when she first saw someone come out of theatre looking like that, she nearly pulled the emergency alarm, someone stopped her. 🤣🤣

Re: SURGERY SEPTEMBER 2018

@ Xela, Yes the drain removal is a big thing, a huge relIef 😊
I also got my softie foob from my BCN. it makes a huge difference to not be lopsided in clothing even when pottering about at home. Side effect wise, the nerve pain is kicking in in my arm. It’s only on the inside of my arm but is a really intense tingly sensation, the skin feels like it is sticky but it’s dry, really weird. I was given a horseshoe shaped satin pillow when I left hospital and that feels lovely between my boob and arm. The gentle pressure is a relief. Off painkillers except at bedtime and managed to cook a wicked chilli today so feeling positive. Results of surgery on Thursday. 🤞
