I had a single mastectomy several years ago and didn't want recon. because of extra surgery. I don't think I would have coped well with a semi-numb breast. My chest is still part numb on the affected side. I wear a prosthesis and have to be a bit careful with bras and tops because my scar is quite high. A tight camisole or camisole bra stops the prosthesis pulling the bra cup forward and exposing the scar when I bend forward so the only (small)bug-bear for me is that everything has to pass that particular wearability test. The decision was right for me and I have never regretted it. Best wishes.
Two mastectomys 7 weeks apart (cancer in both breasts!). No reconstruction. Recon is a Bigger operation, longer healing time. Definitely didn't want any weakening of back/ shoulder muscles. No sensation to the reconstructed area so only reason for doing it is to maintain a silhouette. Also if I had recon then would I be able to feel a recurrence? Very important to me as my aunt has had breast cancer 4 times including a recurrence in her scar.
Flat now 6 months and very happy, don't bother wearing prostheses but I have them in case I want to.
There is often an assumption that you will go for recon. Just remember, it may look like a boob, but it won't feel like one!
Would it be possible for you to have a gap between a mastectomy and reconstruction to see how you feel? I had an LD reconstruction a year after mastectomy which gave me time to heal, recover and decide that reconstruction was right for me.

Have to decide on whether to go for reconstruction or total mastectomy. Would love to hear from those who decided against reconstruction and how happy they are with the route they took.
