After waiting 19 weeks I decided to phone them to see if there was a problem with my application as I hadn't heard anything at all from them. They checked and told me the claim was still being processed as I would need a health assessment, usually face to face but obviously now would be on the phone.
I waited for the call but it never came! The next thing I knew I had a letter saying I had qualified for the full amounts.
I was never given a DS1500 form and can only assume that my Oncologist submitted it.
I hope you hear back from them soon. If I can help with any more questions please feel free to ask.
Hi Sarah , Fantastic news you have had your pip award , please may I ask if you had a phone assessment and if you were given a DS1500 form by doctor etc ! I applied early January and had phone assessment a couple of weeks ago and still haven’t heard as yet !
I was diagnosed with SBC in September 2019 and only learned about PIP last year when a friend mentioned to me that I would be eligible and should claim. The form is fairly straightforward and even though it took 23 weeks to be decided (I was told it was due to Covid) I heard last week that I was successful and have been awarded the highest amount for Daily Living and also Mobility. It was backdated from when I first applied and it won't be renewed for another 10 years (hoping I'll still be around then!!) I hope this helps for anyone who is not sure whether they should apply. I have also applied for a Blue Badge and a concessionary bus pass. You can still be working to apply for PIP, it is all calculated on a points system.
Just saw this post on PIP, and was interested as I am recently diagnosed with bone mets in right hip, my mobility is greatly reduced to extent on 2 occasions in last 4 weeks we have been unable to get me upstairs to bed due to pain/immobility and have had to sleep on sofa! Phoned Macmillan today and they weren’t totally convinced I would get PIP. My husband, who is self employed, has been unable to work for last month as I am just not mobile enough most of time to be left alone. I’m getting full hip replacement (plus more) with minimum 12 weeks recovery soon to try to increase my mobility.
Is it really worth even trying to claim this?? How bad do you have to be? I’m totally furious I have worked all my life and can’t understand why I don’t seem to be able to get some financial assistance in my hour of need,
Dear Rosie , Thankyou for your reply , can I ask are you fairly stable at the moment and have you had the pip long , I’ve asked my GP to sign the form but he won’t as he says I’m expected to live longer than the 6months ! In the past the breast care nurses have signed form and now they have asked the oncologist who wouldn’t ! I’m really struggling financially at the moment and this has really stressed me out now the pip has stopped 😞 x
Hi Helen, my GP has always filled my DS1500 form, good luck with getting it sorted, we really don’t need the hassle do we, I think it should be awarded indefinitely.
Hi Belinda , Thankyou for your helpful information, will definitely look into this take care Helen xx
Hi Gilly , many thanks for your reply , I will complete the form was just worried in case I wouldn’t be able to claim, as I’m stable at the moment and wouldn’t match the criteria!
take care Helen xx
I have never asked my Onc for the DS1500 form and always complete the PIP form myself. I've not had a problem with it being claimed or at my first renewal. As long as you fill out the form with a good explanation of how you are affected for each category, you can make a successful renewal claim. Obviously you need to send in copies of your most recent scans / reports to back up what you are saying in your form. You are still entitled to PIP but what might change is the weekly rate they pay you. I think you can ask MacMillan for assistance with filling out the form. Ask your BCN to see if she can refer you to anyone that can help with it. Best wishes xx
I hope you are well today.

Hi , can anyone advise I’ve had secondary breast cancer for a few years and was able to have pip and now it needs renewing , I did get it at higher level , and now breast care nurse says my oncologist won’t sanction the ds1500 as I’ve been stable for a while ! I’m not working now and am panicking as I do rely on that money as anyone else had the same ?
