Hi Jojo It really is moving fast for you which is great. I get my PICC line in today & then start EC on Thursday am so ill be able to let you know what to expect especially for the PICC. Im nervous too but I keep reminding myself they do this all the time. I'm more nervous about the chemo & at the moment just want to run away...but I know I won't. I'll let you knowhow today goes xx Jo

Glad you had a positive experience with your wig session not a jockey. I met my lovely chemo nurse yesterday and she suggested getting my hair cut before treatment as it is pretty long and she said it most likely fall out to some extent even with the cold cap. Managed to get an appointment with my usual hairdresser today. I was told we'd get an appointment to help with our wigs at the hospital next week so I hope I get as good service as you! I had a bit of a blip going into the chemo unit yesterday as there were patients there having treatment, it really brought it home how real this is. I also got my schedule and whilst I'm sure I won't (and maybe no-one else!) be doing anything it was a bit sad to see new years eve as one of the dates. Next job is to tell my youngest son who is away at University. He knows I have cancer but doesn't know I need chemo. This really is a hard slog isn't it. Jo xx

Thanks Jan, I think you might be right they were definitely pushy! However I've accepted this needs to happen and have a covid test tomorrow, PICC line on Tuesday then 1st EC chemo on Thursday. I wanted to go the dentist and have my hair cut but they weren't happy postponing. Thanks for the advice & wishing oyu all the best with your treatment too xxx

Hello All, I'm Jo, I've been on the forums a while (diagnosed in June) but now found myself here after 2 lumpectomies with positive margins and then high oncotype score. Having EC 6 cycles & every 3 weeks followed by mastectomy. Chemo is my worst nightmare and having a hard time accepting the treatment but know I have to. Covid test tomorrow then PICC line in on Tuesday, first chemo session on Thursday. Hello Jan, Thanks so much for responding so quickly. I really appreciate you sharing your story, I am so sorry you are on diagnosis 4. To some degree your message highlights my fears that chemo is destructive of the whole body and not always that successful. But you hit the nail on the head about recurrence. If you don't take it you will always question your choice. I truly am 50/50 on this at the moment so lots of thinking today. I might ask if they can push it off by a week. I have to say my oncologist was like a car saleswoman pushing this "only available today" offer. Thanks again Jan, really appreciate it. Best of luck with your treatment xxxx

Hi Kitkat, Thanks so much for your fast response, time is certainly of the essence here ! I really appreciate your message and yes I will ask for the rationale behind their recommendations. I guess they are are also restricted by what they are allowed to recommend, as you say there are a lack of clinical trials for any alternatives but that's probably because no-one would pay for them as there's no profit in the final product. Sorry I work in the pharma industry and I'm feeling very cynical... I'm not at a dedicated cancer hospital but I think I will have a chemo nurse assigned to me. I'm sorry that your cancer has come back for the 3rd time. I hope you are doing ok, that sounds like quite a treatment path. Again you having taken tamoxifen for 2 years and yet it has still returned makes me question the success of such treatments. I know we have to trust that our teams have only our best interests at heart and I do believe in my team, they are lovely. Lots of thinking to do... HI, I, at 48, was diagnosed in June 2020 with IDC grade 3. ER/PR + but HER-2- in left breast. Poor mammograms due to dense breast tissue led to MRI which showed a grey area of indeterminate size. II asked for a mastectomy, they wouldn't recommend it. Underwent 2 lumpectomies (and 2 nodes removed in surgery 1) as my margins weren't clear after surgery 1 but nodes were clear but they had found DCIS which was the grey area they saw before. The 2nd surgery revealed positive margins so mastectomy was suggested. Asked for an oncotype test which they weren't planning on doing and my score was 46, 20 above the recommendation for chemo. However in my meeting today the oncologist revealed we always offer chemo for your type of cancer (IDC) for over 50s not usually under and we don't offer chemo for DCIS. Therefore if it weren't for the oncotype test they would have kept with mastectomy and left it at that. They told me that all my sessions had been booked but that it was still up to me and I should make a decision in 24 hours... Did anyone else feel backed in to a corner or were you all happy to accept/trust that they have your best interests at heart? I felt my oncologist was against any kind of complementary treatments including dietary influences like turmeric and fasting during chemo. Sorry to be negative and maybe I'm overstepping the mark here but I've had a very long trip from diagnosis to here (with many friends from this forum and other places moving on to recovery quickly in relative terms) and this is only primary breast cancer. God knows what will happen if it comes back 😞 Jo xx

Thanks so much for replying Evie. Unfortunately I got my oncotype result and they are recommending chemo. Had my first oncology meeting today after all the surgical ones since June & I was not convinced but think there's very little choice. Savana, I really hope you get the result you are hoping for. Evie, thanks for all your advice. I'm disappointed with their rational for chemo seems like its a conveyor belt of "if you get this, you get that" no thought to other options.

Hi Savana, Yes agree it is worrying not knowing if it is going to become invasive or not. I was having a mastectomy but they did my oncotype test and the results can=me back yesterday so i have to go for chemo first. I'm gutted as it's the only thing I didn't want BUT i know it is the right thing to do. I hope your surgery goes ok. Have you decided what type of reconstruction? Jo xx

Hi Charliep5, I have exactly the same as you. I have had 2 lumpectomies and due to have a mastectomy soon as the margins weren't clear. I asked my surgeon last week and she said it was bruising but i really don't think it is. Did you ask your breast nurse? Jo xx

Hi Savanah, Oh sorry to hear your DCIS has come back. I guess I feel like I'm having such bad luck as this is the 3rd attempt to get all the IDC & DCIS out and I'm only on the first occurrence. But I know this can be the case with smaller breasts I am 34D. I think it is wise to remove the DCIS if you can then the risk is less for it spreading in future. How didi they predict 50/50 I didnt think they could predict that at all. Have they recommended reconstruction or have you decided against? I am only 48 and still would like to have two boobs so have been recommended the implant. I'm just not sure I trust my team now after two bad ops. Hope yours goes well and you recovery is swift and trouble free xx

Hi All I have had two lumpectomies on one breast to remove IDC and some DCIS. As the 2nd surgery didn't have clear margins they are recommending mastectomy. I asked for this right from the start but they didn't recommend it. Now I feel like I'm back at square one. Has anyone else had this? Thanks Jo

I work in the pharma/ medical industry and if the Germans make it, it's always to the highest standard!!! Oh great Louise, you have a date! I'll keep my fingers crossed the other surgeon can do that too. Shame about the tummy fat but yes what irony!! I've heard some good things about the implants too so I'm sure they will do a good job. The main thing is getting rid of the cancer as you say. Do you have to isolate for 14 days or will it just be the 3 days like me? I'm going to work this week to keep my mind busy plsu I'm feeling pretty good right now so I want to make the most of it. You're bound to have bad days, I think we all are and it's justified and acceptable to be upset. Letting it all out can help a lot. Hi Ladies, Good to hear from you both and sorry for being a bit absent. My surgery went ok but I get quite a post-op anaesthetic fog and tend to sleep it off which seems to have worked as I am back in the room today! I'm so pleased to hear your results Claudia, shrinkage and no spread, yay! How did chemo go yesterday? Are you still feeling as tired? I hope you're doing ok? Louise, how's the underarm, mine is improving daily now and the 2nd surgery was fine, it's sore but nothing like the first op. And you have your recon meeting tomorrow I think? I really hope that goes ok. I'm pleased you got to go out too, there nothing like a good pud!!! Funny what small things matter. Results this Friday or next, I'll keep you posted. Hi Louise, Yes agreed re a coping mechanism, it certainly helped to focus on other things. Sorry to hear your underarm is hurting too. I asked the nurse and she did say it can take a while and not to over do it. It probably didn't help making new garden furniture at the weekend then - oops! 😅 Yes I have said to a few people I'm an old pro at this surgery malarchy so nothing to worry about and I'm not.
