Hi MoDo, I had an axillary clearance 5 years ago this month. Unfortunately my armpit is still numb but I've got used to it now. For the first year you do need to go careful with the arm in respect to lifting heavy weight however on the same score you shouldn't not use the arm to carry stuff. My physio & consultant both said to gradually increase the weights carried. The worst thing was to not really use the arm then one day suddenly pick up something really heavy. I now do a 🏋️ ♀️ Les Mills body pump class 2 or 3 times a week & haven't got lymphedema 😊 Yes you do need to be careful when gardening not to scratch your arm and yes it's best not to have blood tests or blood pressure taken on that arm if it can be avoided. Hi carol, I was triple meg too with a 34mm lump plus 1 sentinel node had cancer. I wasn’t given a choice, I was told I was having chemo! However I would have gone through everything they recommended, I wanted to chuck everything at this vile disease. Chemo is certainly not a walk in the park and at times I felt pretty awful but it’s just a few months out your life. The way I see it, it’s short term pain for long term gain. Im 5 years clear this year & the days of chemo are just a nasty memory. Best of luck in whatever you decide x

Hi Kaz, you may want to join your relevant (the month you started chemo) monthly chemo group in the going through treatment section of this forum. I had 6 rounds of fec-t in 2013 & found chatting with girls going through the same as me at the same time was invaluable and most of us are still in contact now. Best of luck x

Hi Jollyrancher, I had 6 rounds of chemo, the last dose being Christmas Eve (merry fecking Xmas ☹️ ) that was 2013 I’m still NED (no evidence of disease). As I feel I’ve been given a second chance at life I take my health very seriously now so have a reasonably good diet, exercise 6-7 hrs a week and am now the fittest I’ve been in years (I’m 54). The days of chemo weren’t easy & at times I felt truly awful but now it’s just all a nasty memory. The doctors wouldn’t recommend if they didn’t think you needed it. When you start chemo I highly recommend you join your relevant monthly chemo group in the going through treatment section of this forum. I found it invaluable & am still in daily contact with most of the ladies I met there - we all met up 4 months after finishing chemo it’s was lovely and very emotional. Wishing you the best x

2 weeks after diagnosis I met with surgeon to discuss treatment. One week later I had surgery. I think I’d be jumping up & down having a tantrum if I was told I’d have to wait that long. Best of luck x

I finished active treatment (mastectomy, axillary clearance & fec-t chemo) in Dec 2013 I was 49 when diagnosed. I’m now 54, hair had grown back albeit a bit thinner than before but worth the price in my opinion, I’m back at work and I’m fitter than I was in my 40’s! I’m at the gym 5 days a week and do 2 spin classes a week! Not gonna lie chemo was tough & probably took me a year to start to fully get over the side effects. The steroids play havoc with your emotions, when you stop taking them your mood drops through the floor but just keep telling yourself it’s the drugs and you’ll feel better soon. If you haven’t already join your relevant monthly chemo group in the ‘going through treatment’ section of this site - I don’t know what I would have done without their support. I’m still in daily contact with many of the women from my group. Best of luck xx

When I was told I had TN I asked for bilateral mastectomy. My surgeon said if the cancer is gonna come back it could come back anywhere so what other parts of you would you like me to chop out? And by the way this had nothing to do the NHS saving money as I was being treated privately! I believe there is a certain type of cancer that bilateral is recommended for but otherwise unless you have the Brca gene they don’t like chopping off healthy breasts.

Hi NoteRed, It’s early days, you’ve been through a major operation as well as the shock of diagnosis so be gentle on yourself. Things will improve day by day....make sure you do your exercises 😊 I’ve had a mastectomy, a week later back in for axillary clearance, chemo, reconstruction surgery etc etc. That was almost 5 years ago. This morning I’ve just returned from the gym following an hour Body pump class 🏋️ ♂️ Things will improve it just takes time and a lot of patience. Best of luck xx

I know how you all feel particularly Vixm76. As the others have said it does get easier once treatment starts this waiting around is the worst part. Vixm76 I too am a single parent, not quite self employed but it is a family business. I had triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma, I can’t remember the exact size of lump it was roughly 3.8 as scans showed other hot spots in my breast it was recommend I had a mastectomy. Just as well as they found an area of dcis of over 10cm yes that it centimetres 😵 Sorry I’m waffling I just wanted you to know it does get better. I finished chemo 5 years ago and it’s all just a nasty memory now. Wishing you all the best x

I got mine from https://www.macom-medical.com i had product code 1007 I think It coped with my very different sized boobs, GG one side & C cup on the other, I wore it until I was able to have my large boob reduced to match.

I had 6 rounds of fec-t, one round every 3 weeks. It wasn't easy but now 4 years later I'm happy that they threw everything at it. when my surgeon was talking about reconstruction I was thinking to myself "are you mad, I couldn't give a hoot so long as I survive this" but now I'm so glad I listened to him. At the end of the day everyone is different, every cancer is different and we all have different priorities..... only you can decide what is best for you. Hopefully you have faith in your medical team and will be guided by them to make the right decision for you. take care x ps you can look up all the different chemo regimes & potential side effects on the Macmillan website, its very informative.

I can only give my opinion from my experience..... I wasn't really given the choice, my surgeon recommended a skin sparing mastectomy as due to the location & size of the tumour my boob would be quite deformed after a lumpectomy, he said he could get a better result (looks wise) doing a mastectomy & reconstruction. Thank goodness I didn't push for lumpectomy because when I went back for my two week post surgery check up he told me the pathology results - shockingly they found 10cm (yes that is centimetres) of dcis which hadn't been spotted on the mammo! He said they call it the silent killer! Also because I'd had a mastectomy I didn't need radiotherapy, although I still required chemo as I was triple negative. best of luck x

Hi Shocked, i was diagnosed with 10.5 cm dcis and 2.8 cm idc. I asked for double mastectomy, I was told it's major surgery to have just one side done and as I was having surgery prior to chemo they didn't want to do anything else that could delay chemo, how awful would it be if I got an infection in say the side that didn't need doing! My surgeon told me that if my cancer was to come back it could come back anywhere.... kidney, lungs so what other bits would I like him to chop out just in case! However I do know now that if you have lobular cancer you may be offered double mastectomy. so my answer is, it certainly doesn't hurt to ask but be aware that in most cases they will not perform major surgery if it's not necessary, quite rightly too x i ended up having a skin sparing mastectomy, like you say the implant was placed on top of the muscle, almost a year later after chemo I had the temporary one removed and a permanent one put in under the muscle. 6 months after that I had the other side reduced to match. I now have the boobs of a 20 yr old - every cloud and all that 😁 Best of luck x

Hi confuseddaughgter, I was diagnosed in 2013 with the same as your mum, only my idc was a bit bigger at 2.8cm the sentinel node was involved but no other node involvement, I also had over 10cm dcis. I had mx, chemo, no rads followed by recon surgery. I have no evidence of disease since mx, my hair has grown back, I'm back at work and fitter than before I was diagnosed as I figured id been given a second chance so I'm a bit of a gym bunny these days 😊 I agree with the other replies here. The diagnosis stage & waiting for a treatment plan is awful, things start to improve once you know what's what. From what you've told us, it's been caught early so try not to worry! Easier said than done, I know. Absolutely STAY AWAY FROM DR. GOOGLE the info at best is out of date and all you'll achieve is scaring the 💩 Of yourself. Best of luck x

Good morning ladies, I'm from the class of September 2013 I read that some of you have difficulty in sleeping - what time are you taking your steroids? I took mine at 8am & 12 noon as instructed by the hospital, they warned me not to take them later else I'd be up all night. If it's not that, & you haven't got any sleeping tabs, have a dose of night nurse -knocks me out all night 😁 (Remember it has paracetamol so check your temperature prior to taking it) Feeling low is a side effect/withdrawal if you like, after you stop the steroids. I bet if you check your diaries your low moods will match up with when you stopped taking them. Around the half mark for a lot of you now, I remember being elated at this point & I guess a bit apprehensive about the se's of a different drug regime but for me the T was much kinder than the fec take care x

Hi CK & Sept 2017 ladies, I was in the Sept 2013 group. CK your scalp hurting is im afraid the sign that your hair is on its way out ☹️ , I described it as that feeling you get when you've taken a pony tail out. When I only had to touch my hair for it to fall out I took the cutters to it & cut it to a grade 3. Some of the girls in my group shaved it but found that during chemo sometimes it grew a bit and the tiny short hairs act like Velcro on your pillow not a nice feeling, one that more by luck than judgement I managed to avoid.

Good afternoons in ladies, a couple of you mention corsodyl mouthwash, you need to be a bit careful with that as it can stain your teeth. You can get Difflam on prescription and that reminds me don't forget that as you have a cancer diagnosis you are entitled to free prescriptions (England) for 5 years - get the form from your GP x
