Hi to all you brave ladies out there. I am just one week post mastectomy and SLNB op. Feeling wonderful - walking 6 miles a day. Greatly amused by my 85 year old neighbour yesterday who saw me ambling down the local high street. He was so astonished he'd assumed that I would be in bed for a week - that he shrieked 'Resurrection!!' at the top of his voice ( well he is married to a vicar) I laughed so much my wound hurt. Be brave ladies . You are not alone and there is so much love and support for you.

Welcome K! So many of us here are very fit and active- irrationally - makes it harder to believe the bc diagnosis. However I do think that a good fitness level makes a big difference to post surgery recovery. Good luck with your journey. This is a great place for feeling a shared strength but also a place where you do not have to put on a tough front on the difficult days.

I have found the drain (only got one) much easier than I'd thought. Useful to have a little cushion to place under arm as I found that stopped me thinking I was going to knock it out. Started with 100ml of fluid post op; now- day 5- down to 25ml so am hoping to go to bc clinic tomorrow to have drain removed .

All the luck and courage in the world go with you for tomorrow Maggie. I'm now 5 days post op- feel good, have had no need for any pain meds or sleeping tabs (big thanks to my surgeon), beginning to walk twice a day now albeit with trusty drain concealed under scarves. Taking it a day at a time. Greatly supported by the forum's sense that we are journeying together.

Left mxt only; not planning on any recon. If I was 20 I might feel differently ! Early days - had surgery last Wednesday but I feel going flat in baggy tops will be fine and I will use prosthetics for posh events .

Hi Lupin- my situation v sim to you but a little further down the line. had mxt on wed plus SLNB - in the event 2 nodes removed, little further info until 2 weeks time. BUT I am v fit and making a good recovery - have had no need for any pain meds; meditation helps keep the scary thoughts at bay; lots of positives - see thread here. Stay calm and you will come through ok.

More positives- 1. I bought some lovely bright red checked pjs for hospital - they make me - and everyone else- smile with their instantly chirpy look. 2. My husband bought me some fab luxury perfume/ toiletries for post op period - deliberately did not open these until today (surgery 2 days ago) - wow!

Many thanks everyone. Have had a really good night - so pleased that surgery is done and at the very least a large chunk of the cancer is out. Have started a new thread 'lava lamp drains' on the surgery pages

Just back from op - have been given (by hospital - made by volunteers I think) a long cross body shoulder bag for the drain- seems to work v well . Iphone charger useful plus all Maggie suggested esp the sherbet lemons. Only in one night. Had mxt and 2 lymph nodes out- results in 2 weeks. Good luck to all dec chemo ladies
