Thanks for taking the time to reply both. I didn't realise about the tissue expander but have since come to a decision for the DIEP after a long chats with various friends. I think I always wanted it but I'm just really scared of the long op and the impact it has on the rest of my body. The plastic surgeon I saw the other day said he always sees the implant patients after the initial surgery is complete but hardly ever sees a DIEP patient again. That's so appealing I'm willing to get over my fear of the big op 🙂 x

Hi All, I am having a skin sparing immediate rebuilld mastectomy in a few weeks time - just the one side, after a diagnosis of DCIS. I'm a B cup with just enough fat to build a boob if I have a DIEP. I really need some help as I am flip flopping and I can't make a decision!!! My rebuild choices are as follows: 1. Single implant Against - I will forever have one boob feeling different to the other Against - If I need radiation after they have analysed my tissue after my mastectomy the implant could go hard (unlikely as I have already had a clear sentinel node but could happen) Against - Risk of scar tissue misshaping implant Against - ongoing surgery replacing implants every 10 years For - minimal downtime For - I'm a good candidate for a match, the surgeon said one of the best he had ever seen (small round boobs) 2. DIEP For - My surgeon is very experience at DIEPs and has done hundreds, the results I have seen at least have been very good For - natural feeling boobs For - if I need radiation there is nothing to go hard Against - I'm scared of such a long op - although I can get over this Against - If I don't like the results there's no other road to go down Against - lots of scarring and interfering with healthy parts of my body. What would you do / what did you do for a single reconstruction. They need to know by next week! Thanks Jenny

Ruth - I hear you! There is a feeling for me that the doctors have so much more serious stuff to deal with and they are in the business of saving lives and that I shouldn't be bothering them with how I am going to look. The DIEP just sounds like so much surgery to have if there are other decent alternatives. I thing the NHS are pushing it maybe because it is considered a more holistic treatment rather than put a foreign body (implant) into a breast. I have never heard of the strattice mesh technique so I will look that up, thanks. Did you feel you got good balance, did you consider getting a smaller implant in the other breast or was it unnecessary? Thanks for the good wishes, I am feeling very stressed at the moment but I know that is to be expected. x

Hi Liz, thanks for your reply 🙂 It's so helpful to talk to others that understand what I am facing. How did you find the implant in terms of balance, did you need anything doing to your other breast to make things even or was it a good match already? There are no plans for radiotherapy currently although I have just had an operation on my sentinel nodes so depending on the result of that things could change, I am working on the basis that it will be clear so I have some clarity in terms of decision making. x

I got diagnosed with DCIS, intermediate grade a couple of weeks ago now. I'm still processing it all and feeling pretty down if I'm honest, but I have determined to research as much as I can so I know what is available to me. I'm 48 and naturally small breasted with a 54mm area of DCIS so the whole breast needs to come off. I feel a little guilty (just me?) focussing on the cosmetic outcome but I have complete trust in the doctors to deal with the cancer side of things. I think looking as normal as possible after is going to be essential for my mental health in terms of moving on. I saw the surgeon re a DIEP last week and it sounds like a huge operation that I don't fancy on top of everything else. They also said I didn't have enough fat to create a proper sized breast so the results would be lopsided. I am currently looking into implants and I am thinking of one implant in my reconstructed breast and a smaller one at a later date to balance me when everything has settled, this seems a lot less invasive compared to the DIEP operation. The hospital are really pushing me for the DIEP and I don't understand why. Has anyone had this done?
