Well I'm delighted to report thee mammo and scan brought up absolutely nothing sinister. I'm very very relieved. The breast care nurse said it is probably simply bodily changes as I age. (Lovely, thank you, I'm 33!). BUT whatever the reason, they cannot find anything nasty, and gratefully I can get back to living without worry. Well tomorrow is the appointment. After just over 2 weeks I've rached a crazy place where part of me thinks I've been a complete drama queen and there's absolutely nothing there and it's all in my imagination, and the other part is thinking it's some hard to find cancer that's making my boob shrink. I hit the wine I'm afraid. Appt tomorrow and I'm shedding it. Really scared. I've built up the worst scenario after 2 weeks. Well it flips between them asking "There's nothing there, why are you even here?" to "It's invasive lobular breast cancer in both breasts". Fortunately kids and husband have distracted me fairly effectively over the last few weeks, but alone time results in tears at sad songs and thinking the worst. 9:30 am. Weather here is rather rubbish, and I was starting to panic about getting kids to school and then to appointment because of flooding. Fortunately, someone is picking the kids up for me so that's a worry lifted. I don't know how i feel, melodramatic one minute, and wondering if they'll wonder why the hell I'm there. There are several of us waiting for appointments, you're not alone xxx. I have pain in my left breast and thickening under the skin, and a since have found a lump, so everything is a concern and of course we don't know if it's something or nothing. Big hugs to you. ... View more

Hugs lucy, 33 must be the magic number 😉 I'm 33 and waiting for my appointment on Tuesday. It's been a long agonising wait, but the end (the appointment is in sight). I've prepared myself for the worst case scenario as much as I can without knowing, if you see what I mean. Don't mean to pick on you, but your comment about the eating issues leaves me questioning, are you saying you accept they may be responsible in at least some part for eating issues? If so, then how can we let them continue? Yes, it's one big fight, because we have a whole fashion industry to fight, along side media involvement, but do we sit there and just hope that our nearest and dearest don't have eating disorders? Or assume that it's only easily influenced people? Or that nothing can ever be done? Do we simply say, well, it's what people want to see? I personally don't think people walking around topless on a beach and a photo of a page 3 model are remotely related. I walk around my house naked, not because I'm a show off, but because I have the minimal body confidence and don't want it rubbing off on my kids. I want them to be able to accept every body. So I have worked very hard on not letting my children see that body angst. I'd go to a naturist beach if my husband, would be happy with it, because I really think it is where everyone is accepted. Topless sunbathing on a beach, i applaud, just never been to a beach where it's happened. There are vast chasms between a topless model who has been placed in a paper, and a woman who's on a beach, not air brushed, not posing a certain way, because even sunbathers can only hold a pose for so long ... oh shelly, the wait is so long and slow. And the horrid thing is, no matter how many people you talk to, who say "90% are non cancerous" you can't stop thinking but what of the other 10%. What would make me so special and exclusive as to not have cancerous cells. And it terrifies me. My ibs is playing up, and I'm overeating horrendously on the days i can, and undereating pathetically on the days I have to. My body is a confused mess to match my brain. I tread tentatively into this thread, as someone who first saw it in the "latest posts section" and so didn't instantly see it was in the secondary section. Obviously I see that now, and understand how Bernie's statements can cause and clearly are causing upset. Maybe having two sisters with breast cancer led her to look at in a different way, I don't know. But I understand that her words will have caused distress to people. I'm still awaiting my appointment at breast clinic, so don't even know what I'm facing, if anything. But one thing I still remember was reading Roy Castles biography years ago. I remember Fiona Castle saying how much she hated the phrase "battling cancer", because for her it wasn't a battle. That would suggest something you could train and fight against. Language is a powerful thing. The language around any illness will therefore cause emotions of some sort. ... View more

Body acceptance is something we should all strive for, I really believe that, and items like the P.3 picture are obstacles in body acceptance. It may seem like harmless fun, but to the girl in school who's a late developer, it's hurtful, when the lad who's dad let him look at p.3 all the time comes in and tells the girl how she's a boy because she's got nothing up top, how she's less than the girls with boobs, how she's less of a woman because she isn't well endowed. ... I'm just hopping on here because this has situation has interested me for a long time, the objectification of both women and now men. The page 3 thing, for me, is old news. The Sun is a dispicable paper, and should be shut down, it's not news, it's tabloid trash, and always has been. But in the bigger picture, yes, parents are allowing their children to look at and gawp at the page 3 models, and this does create from an early age some objectification. Unfortunately now, and I say unfortunately, because cases of anorexia and body dismorphia are happening in both boys and girls as a result of the pressure from media, young men are being objectified in a far more subtle way. Topless male scenes in afternoon viewing like the Merlin programme are permeating through. It's not just men being encouraged to ogle a woman's boobs, it's women being encouraged to gawp at a mans torso. There is so much pressure in this century to look at certain way, and instead of becoming more educated and sensible, we're witnessing image related illness such as anorexia rise at a rapid rate for both young men and women. So personally, the page 3 campaign is too small, and not hitting the right places. We need more campaigning for Body Beautiful for everyone, for there to be body acceptance, not eliteism.
