Hi everyone,
Been on letrozole for 4 months after tamoxifen for 5 years. I am age 44 Dx 2007 IDC grade 2, 1 node, 4 wle, 6 fec, 15 rads.
Been ok on Letrozole apart from a little joint pain and pins and needles. This seems to have settled down but I have quite severe hair thinning and have lost almost half of it down the plughole. I am quite upset about this but also that whilst on Tamoxifen I usually had 2-3 periods a year and it was confirmed 1 year ago that I was menopausal.
I have had 3 periods in the last 4 months, far more than is usual for me. I thought that letrozole was for post menopause so surely I should not have periods. Should I see my Onc before my planned check next February ??? Best wishes to all xxxx

Thanks everyone for your comments. I suppose I,ve got 6 months to think about it. Was looking forward to sleeping better and hopefully losing a stone that has crept on along the way too that seems impossible to shift. x

Hi There,
Havent visited here for nearly 4 years so most wont know me. Brief history DX at 38, grade 2 IDC 1 node. Several WLE due to dodgy margins, 6 chemo and 15 rads, 5 years Tamoxifen. 6 months Tamoxifen then finished ??????
Just been told today after my yearly Onc appointment that possibly going to be put on letrozole when tamoxifen finished. To be honest I am bloody fuming, I,ve had horrendous hot flushes, very little sex drive and fuzzy head possibly caused by sleepless and sweaty nights. The fuzzy heads and tiredness were so bad that I took redundancy from a job I had been in for 15 years as I felt unable to cope anymore. I carried on with the treatment.
Looking forward to ending Tamoxifen and therefore my ties with this disgusting disease and moving on, but my hopes have been dashed. Been reading up on Letrozole and seems to be best for post menopausal women. Recent test at GPs and I was peri menopausal which I think means just about to go into it, I only have 2 periods a year.
Has anyone on here refused to be put on further hormone treatments? I am seriously thinking about it.

Hi There, havent been here for ages. I have had terrible foot pain for 2 1/2 years since starting tamoxifen. My Onc said it was nothing to do with my BC treatment and suggested I see my GP. Had blood tests and xrays which were all normal and was told to take Cod liver oil as probably arthritis ( I am 42 and otherwise fit and fairly slim).
On a recent check up I saw a registra who seemed especially thorough and so I mentioned my foot pains again to him. He said that it was a rare side effect of tamox but he had heard of it.
My usual Onc is very well respected and is regarded as one of the top ones in the North East so it just shows that they dont know everything. I could have saved the NHS a few quid on tests if i had seen the registra first.

Hi There,
I too have had stabbing pain in my breast and also a sore bit just to the right of my nipple about 5 inches away from my WLE scar. My GP is on the BC team at my local hospital so I went to see him.
He couldnt feel any Lumps and said that it sounds like a nerve pain and he gave me Amitriptyline 10mg to take for four weeks. I have a Mammo in June and Onc appoint in July so will mention it again then.
I googled this drug and it says that it is principally an Anti depressant and helps you sleep, It can also be used for nerve ending pains and other things like wetting the bed !!!!
Anyway the pains seem to have subsided and Im sleeping like a baby ( even my hot flushes arent waking me much) I have noticed however that I feel a little spaced out during the day.
Anyway I,ll see how it goes.

Hi Everyone,
I found that my symptoms were very bad at first. Almost Constant flushes no sex drive etc and i was pretty miserable and about to stop taking it but I persevered.
I,ve been taking it now for 1 year and find that my side effects come and go and currently my sex drive has returned and I only get the odd night sweat. My periods are sporadic , I,ve only had 3 in 18 months but as long as I can live with the side effects that is ok.
I do still have a week or so of quite bad flushes once in a while but it has definitely settled down. So might be worth trying it for a bit longer.

Hi everyone,
I,ve had very sore feet for about a year since finishing rads last Feb 08. I spoke to my Onc who said that you dont get sore feet on my Chemo (6 x Fec)and perhaps it was Arthritis. I,ve had Xrays and blood tests for Gout and everything ok. Its like a joint pain and if I have been resting I hobble about like an 80yr old for five minutes when I get up. I have it in both feet but right one is worse and especially sore in my Big toe joint. Oh by the way I,m only 40 and never had sore feet before even after wearing stilettos most of the 80,s.
So it was a mystery but I was looking on the web for Tamoxifen side effects and came across a woman who had similar problems and it is a rare side effect of Tamox apparently. So just another 4 years to go on Tamoxifen before i find out if I,m right.

Hi Everyone,
I had WLE and nodes removed June 07, Then Chemo and rads finished Feb 08. I have been ok since. Did exercises and gained almost 100 pc movement in left arm. I noticed a little swelling on top of my arm about Christmas time and I have possibly a little Lympho under my arm but didnt cause me any probs.
Recently though I am increasingly uncomfortable in bed ,my arm aches and i feel as if it is totally in the way and keeping me awake together with the odd hot flush here and there. I try and prop it up with cushions but havent noticed if its helped. Can anyone suggest anything.

Hi Bikerbabe,
I feel for you also. For every Chemo while pregnant story on here with a good ending, there will also be lots with sad endings too. I think that you made the right choice, there could be lots more babies but you have only one life.
I was young (39) when I had chemo and tolerated It quite well. I felt quite bad for a couple of days and then ok just a bit nausea and a bit tired. I still did everything I did before with not much help. So you will get through it.

Hi There,
I shopped around and found a policy for the Carribean for OH and 2 kids and me for about £30 total. It covered usual plus 5 million dollars med insurance. It didnt cover anything to do with Bc but as It was only a year from DX and felt really well i felt it was a chance worth taking. The company was Columbus insurance and I found it on a price comparision site. You have to book on this site as if you go direct it is twice as much ( which is crazy but true)

Hi Bikerbabe,
So sorry you are facing this terrible dilemma. You must be quite young and you have a daughter to think about so you must think of your health first as you are not much good to a baby if you become very ill.
I know two ladies who have become pregnant and had healthy babies after Chemo.
I,m sorry if this sounds harsh and nobody can make this decision. I would speak to your Onc at length about other options available.

I have been on Tamoxifen for 10 months and the menopausal symptoms especially hot flushes were quite bad to start with, after about 4 months they became less and then stopped for about 4 months. I had 3 normal periods and then on my next perscription I was given a different brand ( CP) and straight away loads of hot flushes again. My Pharmacist would not listen to me when I complained and said that it was total coincidence.
I am on my second box of CP brand and the hot flushes are now less frequent. Boots own make has been recommended on here.

So sorry you have joined the club nobody wants to be in. I was dx last year aged 38 with 2 kids also and was completely devastated too. I had lumpectomy then 3 further excisions before they got clear margins. Chemo and Rads. Its nearly a year since treatment finished and I,m fighting fit and it all seems like a distant nightmare.
You will get throught it. Its too bad that you have to have Ops at Christmas but Breast surgery is not very painful and I,m sure you will be ok for the 25th and hopefully at home with your family.
You will get lots of support and Information on this site. I wish all the best to you and your family.

I cant see your address so either the moderators deleted it our your private message worked. hope u r feeling a little better. My initial shock and crying all the time lasted about 2 weeks. I hope u have lots of support to help u with your little ones. I would try and get everything for christmas now and wrap your presents, so everything is done. I wouldnt like to leave my wrapping for my OH (slap dash wouldnt be the word for it). However yours may be neater and a bit more creative than mine.
Dont worry if you need Chemo. I am young and fairly fit and I tolerated it fairly well and managed to do everything and look after my 2 kids also.( 7 and 11) and needed very little help but I,m stubborn and refused alot also.
I hope your op goes well and hope you have a relaxing Christmas.

Hi Jacqui,
I had something very similar a few weeks ago and posted on here " more worries about lump under scar". Had an ultrasound which came back as scar tissue. My consultant took it out to be on the safe side and it was scar tissue and lumpy tissue caused by the Rads.
Hope everything is ok for you. If you want to get Christmas out of the way first before you investigate this, then that is up to you but must get it checked out quicker the better.

Having a BC dx really does your head in. I was horrible to my OH, I have kicked and punched him, told him I hated him and wished i had never met him. I have shouted and been really impatient with the kids. I started drinking a bit too much and kicking off at my friends.
It didnt help matters when my Mum died suddenly at 61 of a heart attack just after my 3rd Chemo. I found my self resenting people with a happy healthy life also.
After Rads finished I started feeling a little happier and its been up hill all the way. I still feel down sometimes and I worry like mad about every ache and pain but almost back to normal, and my OH just took it on the chin and now just laughs about my behaviour.
Your wife may be depressed so should speak to her Gp. Best of luck with everything.
