I had reduction surgery with an implant to my non cancer affected breast nine years ago. Three years ago the implant was removed due to contracture and replaced with an LD flap. All has been fine until two weeks ago when I felt a sharp pain in the centre of the breast which then became an ache /pain and this has continued. Is it possible that this is a muscle strain? How long should I give it to recover before seeking GP advice and referral to my local Breast Clinic? Thanks

Hello, I realise that this is several months after you asked the question and you may already have reached a decision on your own situation, but I can provide a positive response regarding LD flaps and swimming. I am a keen swimmer, usually 1km 3 times per week, so questioned my surgeon about how soon I could get back to swimming and the likelihood of impact. I had removal of an implant and an LD flap to either sides but six months apart. Swimming played a large part in my physio to get back to full movement and strength, and I have not suffered any of the issues which are detailed as possible side effects. I hope that this helps.

Hi SweetCandy, I had Mx with reconstruction in Feb 2013 using a temporary implant. Then following chemo & rads, in October, I had the other breast operated on, but rather than having reduction and uplift, I opted to have another MX with temporary implant. Very pleased with the results and have not decided whether to keep the current implants or have another operation at some point to have them changed for permanent implants. Jude

Eiblin, that is good to know. A positive story. If I can make it through nine treatments I would be a lot happier given the research in Finland which has now led to them prescribing nine only , albeit over a shorter time period. Good luck with the rest of your treatments. Jude

Ladies, Have any of you had a tissue expander fitted? In my case, the cardiologist has stated repeatedly that it is difficult to take accurate EF readings during an echo due to the position of my implant. Jude

Hi Looby, For the same reason as Tracy gives, In Feb 2013 I opted for an MX with immediate temporary implant or tissue expander, following ILC diagnosis. My tumour, which was 5cm, had not been apparent until after biopsies were carried out. In October, I followed this with an MX to the other side, also with a Becker implant, rather than having a reduction operation. One of the risks with lumpectomy is that the results show insufficient clear margins and further surgery is required to obtain them. Let us know what you decide. Jude

Tracy, I had a tissue expander with saline fill during an MX in February and have just had a further MX with the same again two weeks ago to the other side for the same reason as you. My surgeon part fills the implant during surgery and I haven't had any further fill. I had 15 sessions of radiotherapy through August and so far so good no adverse effect on the implant. From your post I am not sure whether you are referring to a permanent implant or a tissue expander, but my surgeon has only had need to remove one tissue expander to date due to the effect of rads. Gilly, You sound to be doing really well. Interesting that you swim regularly, as my oncologist was very clear from my first meeting with him that he advised against swimming whilst undergoing treatment - both chemo & rads. I am really looking fowarded to getting back in the pool once surgery to my other side settles. Also that you were given different exercises post rads - it really is amazing how we are given such differing advice isn't it! Jude

Tanguy, My BS takes a different view. i had a tissue expander fitted during MX operation in February, in the knowledge that I would be having rads after chemo. The expander was two thirds filled during the operation and I haven't had any further saline added since (my choice). Two weeks ago to provide the best symmetry and for piece of mind, I had a MX to the other side with an expander, so am currently getting over the surgery. I had fifteen rad treatments completed 8weeks ago without any apparent effects on the tissue expander, and based on his experience my surgeon feels that negative effects can be over stated. Bella, I was 32ff and had a tissue expander in February during MX to remove 5cm ILC tumour, which was two thirds filled during the operation. The operation was replicated ten days ago for the other side so will match each other and I can consider whether to complete fill of the expanders or not, and at a later date whether to exchange for silicone implant. I am very pleased with the look so far and am not in too much pain. Leaning at the moment towards staying smaller, but may change my mind once all settled. Jude

Daisy, I had my 4th Herceptin last week followed by an echo which showed some adverse change to my heart. I am going to have another echo in three weeks whilst in the meantime taking some ACE inhibitors - drug to help the heart pump, and hope that there is an improvement. Stay positive. Jude

Interesting - I can certainly relate to what he is saying. Honeymonster - fourth Herceptin this morning for me. I am experiencing similar feelings , physical energy is starting a slow comeback but mentally I don't feel that the fatigue has passed! I was signed up for a Mindfulness course. At Maggies but timings didn't fall for me unfortunately. Hope. All Marchies are moving forward post rads now and seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Jude

Interesting that Angela has been told to avoid swimming for a year, I was told it was OK after 4 weeks post rads!! Who to believe eh? It is really cold here now, so nice to hear that some of you are still benefitting from the sunshine and warmth.
