Hello Wicko, I have just picked up your thread. I completely understand how confused, shocked, and, probably, isolated you feel. I had DIEP surgery just over 4 weeks ago. I am so glad I chose this option. I, like some others on this thread, didn't want an implant- i wanted the reconstruction to be made of "me", and reading other threads i understand that implants have more recalls for further surgery than other reconstructions, so basing a decision purely on recovery time may not be the best way of judging what's best. i was advised by surgeons that DIEP was the "gold standard", though whatever you choose is about it being right for you. I was terrified of having the surgery as I had never been ill in my 48 years, and i was worried about the recovery time. However, the op went fine, and I was able to walk around on day 2, and things progressed from there each day. I have just come back from a holiday in Norfolk and I drove the two hours there and back. What I have discovered is that surgeons manage your expectations by telling you the worst case scenario for recovery, which is absolutely right as you need to be in possession of all the facts, and understand the risks and potential complications before making a decision as it IS a big deal. Surgeons also do the op their way eg I had NO dressings or compression garments on my wounds. I have had no swelling in my abdomen and, whilst I am still healing, I feel well and can move around pretty normally and this was the case after a couple of weeks? How you progress and heal though is a very personal and individual thing. I don't know if you have made your decision yet, but please let me know if you would like to exchange further emails. I wish you all the best at what I know is a very difficult time.
