Last week following a core biopsy I was told I have a B3 "without atypia" papilloma. Since the biopsy, I have developed what feels like a hard cordlike thread running through the outside of my breast which leaves an indent if I raise my breast, down from the place the biopsy was taken. Having googled this I believe it to be thrombophlebitis (Mondor's). It appeared about 3 weeks after my initial biopsy. However, When I showed it to my ultrasound consultant I was told the vein may just be inflamed, and it unlikely it was related to the biopsy. I'm now waiting two weeks for the histology on the removed papilloma. I've been told even if it is benign I will need to return for another ultrasound in a few months to check the papilloma was completely removed and hasn't regrown. I just wondered if anyone on the forum now has gone through any of this with a papilloma? When I first had the news that I had a papilloma I thought I'd just need an op and that would be that. Also, I'm wondering what could have caused the line if it wasn't the biopsy? If anyone has a similar experience of either or both, I'd love to hear from you.

I am sorry I'm posting such a lot at the moment. I had a biopsy about a month ago and my breast felt lumpier than ever - more lumps, some are really hard now, too. Perhaps it takes a while for swelling and bruising to disappear and that's all it is, I do hope so? It is so hard to "check for what's not normal" when your breasts are so changeable and lumpy. Anyway, I now have something that was definitely not there before: a hard line in my boob that seems to extend from an external scar but not to where the lump is. It seems to be more under the surface of the skin, whereas the lump is meant to be a couple of inches or so into the breast tissue. It feels like a fine, hard unbroken strand, the sort of width of a hair or tooth floss. It about 3 inches long. The strange thing is, they haven't put in a wire yet or left any other sort of marker. Could this be where the local anaesthetic jab was administered or could it be something else? I am sorry to bother you again online as I have been told to ring one of your nurses but my circumstances are such at the moment that I'm not alone much so it's difficult to make the call.

Hi coffeetogo Thank you for your post. I'm so sorry to read about your situation. I feel very much the same, it is so difficult to be seen. And when I finally get to the hospital I forget to ask the ultrasound operator what I wanted to know. I go home wondering, "Well, I now know what that is, but what about this lump? Did they see it? Did they miss it?" I hope you do get your next MRI. xx

Hello All I have been told I have a moderately high risk of developing breast cancer due to several cases on my mother's side, including my mum. I have very lumpy breasts and hardly dare check my breasts (although I do) because I seem to find something between each annual mammogram. For this reason, I am a frequent visitor to the breast clinic. Unfortunately my breasts only seem to be getting lumpier as I approach the menopause. I find it increasingly difficult to know what's normal and what is not normal anymore and it weighs on my mind such a lot. Ten years ago an NHS consultant told me if she had anything to do with it, I'd have ultrasounds with my annual mammograms as my breasts are so dense and so "difficult to read". Around that time I was referred to the Family Breast Screening programme but when I asked the nurse about this she said that that wasn't needed, that digital mammograms are very good today at spotting changes. However, I found a lump recently which hadn't been picked up by the routine screening seven months before. I was sent to have an ultrasound only to discover that the lump that took me to the doctors was benign breast tissue, but there was yet another lump that I hadn't noticed. This was biopsied and very thankfully turned out to be an intraductal papilloma. Sorry for this rather rambling post but I wanted to know if there is anyone out there has found themselves in a similar position and has managed to get additional regular ultrasound screening through the NHS. The way things are where I live is one goes to see the GP with each new breast issue, invariably one is told to come back 2-4 weeks later to see if it has gone (mine never do!) and then there's a 2 week wait to see a consultant. Please don't get me wrong, I'm so grateful for the NHS, but it all quite stressful really with my family history.

Sorry to post yet again and over the Christmas holidays. Thank you for being there. As you will see from my previous posts, I had a breast biopsy less than two weeks ago. They discovered an intraductal papilloma. They took three core biopsy samples and my consultant also took three mammograms of the same breast so I feel well looked after. The bruising after the event was spectacular but even - blues, yellows, and black - but I noticed this morning when I got up there was a strange deep red wavy line down the side of my breast, that sort of crossed the site where the biopsy was taken - a bit like a wavy red vein, about four inches long. It has since completely disappeared. I wondered if the blood had pooled there overnight. The Is this something that is normal for a biopsy site? I would love to ask my consultant's office but it is closed until 29th. There is no pain or heat.

I've been diagnosed with an intraductal papilloma. Very thankful that this is what it is after a couple of weeks of wondering. The initial thought was it was a fibroadenoma but they did a biopsy to be sure as I'm in my 50s and they were erring on the side of caution. I have been told I will have surgery some time next month to remove it and have been given a leaflet about the fact that one can return to work after a couple of days but I'd be interested to find out a bit more about the recovery period. Should one rest completely for 48 hours after the op. Also, can one drive, and can one pick things up like shopping etc? My papilloma is under 2 cms but quite deep in the breast tissue. The surgeon is going to have to remove it via a side incision. Sorry to ask all these questions but I help look after someone and I forgot to ask the surgeon; I'm trying to figure out if I need to get in carers to cover for me while I'm recovering. Thank you for all your help.

I wonder if you can help. How common it is to have a fibroadenoma in someone in their mid-fifties. I've just had one biopsied to make sure it is just a fibroadenoma, but I wonder why it has only just shown up in an ultrasound, despite the fact that I've been having annual mammograms for the past few years, the last one being eight months ago.

Codie I have only just found your post. I have been looking at this site for few months because like you, I have had breast pain for four months. I just wanted to say that while I have been looking at the forum I have noticed a lot of people have posted with symptoms of pain and there is no doubt about it, it is very anxiety inducing. Although quite a number of us have been told, after investigation by the breast cancer clinic, there is nothing to worry about surely this is more easily said than done! I t seems incredible to me that one can encounter so much discomfort and not have anything wrong. Yet from my wider reading (I google too much!) it really does seem that breast pain can sometimes have absolutely no explanation. I am afraid I have no experience of fibroadenomas but I just wanted you to know that you are not alone in being concerned about your pain and I really hope you find the answers you are looking for.

Such good news that your Mum is coming over! You are NOT a wimp, a lot of people don't like the thought of MRI scans, it is perfectly normal to feel like that. My first and worst was when the operator was scolding me for not learning Catalan instead of Castellano. The next time the operator was a lovely Spanish lady who just kept saying, "Hola!" every few minutes - so sweet - and things like, "Diez mintos mas" - it just helped so much. Maybe your friend could ask for the operator to speak to you in this way, maybe they will even say the odd word in English. I will be thinking of you over the next few days. xx

Keek's example is a good one - it seems to me that countries vary incredibly in what they think of as 'standard procedure'. Could it be that this MRI scan follow up is just standard for that hospital? Maybe they are doing it if they can recoup the MRI costs via the E111 scheme? I don't know enough about it, but maybe that would be a reason to do it too. But if you need a few phrases to write down to hand to the MRI operator to let them know you are scared and don't understand much Spanish I'll post them on the forum if that is allowed. The other thing I should say is that my little daughter had to have an MRI scan a few months ago and I was actually allowed to be with her and hold her ankle (not her hand!) while she was having a knee scan. Perhaps you could take someone too. I know it is hard but try to focus on the fact they are actually being quite thorough with this. xx

Hello Gkh I am so sorry you are having to go through this. I am sure you will get lots of help from this forum and if you can perhaps ring the number in the UK for some support, bearing in mind it is Easter. I am not sure when the phones are manned but just in case it is relevant I should mention there is a Bank Holiday here on Monday. I have learned that MRI scans can be very helpful for lots of reasons but one is if you have dense breast tissue they are a really good as they show much more detail. I was once told by a doctor at a UK breast clinic if I was really concerned about anything she would try to push for an MRI for me as I have dense breasts. Bear in mind also that in some countries there is sometimes a tendency to use MRIs more routinely. I wonder if that is the case where you live? We lived in Spain and under private health had an MRI for migraines, I had never been offered one in the UK for my headaches. I am sure the person performing the scan will completely understand your nerves, it is very common to be nervous. Perhaps you can try to find out how to say this in the local language. Even if they just say the odd word of reassurance as the scan happens it will help. It is good they are being thorough.

Hi Piemistress It is so good to hear from you and so good you got some positive news with some possible explanations. It does sound as if you were seen by a real expert. Maybe if your breast returns to how it usually looks and feels soon you might be able to put this behind you. Meanwhile it is unsettling to know what to do if things don't feel or look 'normal'. This is my own dilemma - I still have pain and itching, it alternates, but it is there much of the day, although thankfully no new symptoms, but I keep wondering would an MRI scan identify something that might have been missed? I hope someone else can chime in with their experiences/advice. Keep us posted. All the very best

Hello Chardan I am sorry you are having this pain. From what I have read it is always important to check out pain in one breast so it is great you have that appointment. I just wanted to say that I have pain and aching, very much how you describe, also irritation deep inside the breast, there have been very few days since January I haven't had one or other symptom. I had a mammogram and an ultrasound and they found nothing. The consultant doesn't know what the cause is - he suggested musculoskeletal. I saw my doctor who suggested Tietze syndrome, another who thinks it is post viral neuralgia! Not knowing is unsettling to say the least, especially if there is a family history of breast cancer, which I have, but reading posts on the internet it does seem to be a common problem that isn't always easy to explain. Hi Piemistress I have had an annoying pain and itch in my left breast area, most days, for about two months now. No other symptoms. A mammogram and ultrasound were clear. Sometimes the pain deep in the breast, under it, along the left hand side of it, under the arm or around my back. Maybe the ribs. I am still trying to figure out if I need to see anyone else about it and if so, which consultant to ask to see! It says on one website how distressing this pain can be as one imagines the worse. I can vouch for that. But regarding indentation, a few months after weaning my first child I noticed a kind of puckering/indentation in my right breast and had it checked out. Nothing abnormal was found. Unfortunately I never got the full explanation why from the clinic because were abroad but we have a GP in the family who thought it could be just normal changes connected with finishing breast feeding. That was eight years ago and two mammograms and ultrasounds later, everything is well in that breast. Obviously I would not want anyone to cancel an appointment or put off an appointment with the breast clinic reading this, but I think sometimes these breast changes can be benign. Always worth checking because if it is a problem it is good it can be dealt with quickly, if it isn’t then we have peace of mind. I hope your appointment goes well. Please let us know how you get on.

Just posted recently myself and I know this feeling of paranoia all too well! Seeing those statistics has helped me, poemsgalore, thank you. What I will say is it is always worth speaking to the doctor if you are worried. In the past I have spent so many hours debating - should I, shouldn't I go to the doctors - and actually when I have finally decided to see the doctor and in my case, was actually sent to the breast clinic, I can only tell you how kind everyone was there. They didn't make me feel I was wasting their time (even though nothing was found in the end) and it was great to have that peace of mind.

Thank you so much. I rang your helpline and got some great advice - one of the pieces of advice was that sometimes there is just no reason for the symptoms we are having. Which prepared me for my visit to the breast clinic when I was told nothing more than that my ultrasound revealed nothing worrying so therefore no actual diagnosis. I was told I had very dense breasts which makes mammograms not that reliable, so I was glad I pushed for an ultrasound, just for extra reassurance. The lady at the clinic was so kind and said come back any time I am concerned. So what I am going to do is just wait to see if the symptoms get worse or I get new ones. My breasts are pretty lumpy, so I am no stranger to the breast clinic for checks. I do have a family history of breast cancer so try to be vigilient. However, this month I have new symptoms. Earlier this month I noticed that my left breast itched, deep in the breast, but nothing I could really relieve by itching. Then it became painful - the pain being pretty diffuse. My GP thought perhaps it was mastitis and gave me some antibiotics. It felt like mastitis but my breast wasn't swollen or hot. It didn't have an obvious rash. I was referred to a consultant who said she could not explain the symptoms (didn't think it was mastitis) but to come back if any more symptoms appeared. My annual mammogram came back clear earlier this month, in the midst of this pain. I was pleasantly surprised, and would have been relieved, but of course I am concerned I might have IBC which doesn't show on a mammogram. This waiting game is so hard - I wish I could just get on with things but the pain and itching are getting in the way a bit. Thankfully, for some reason it doesn't wake me up in the night and always seems better first thing in the morning. Then it comes back itching/pain - sort of alternating. In the meantime, while I keep a watchful eye, I was wondering if anyone can give any other possible explanation for pain and itching - other than cancer. I am in my mid forties and so far, no obvious menopausal symptoms. Thank you.
