Hi Lou. Sorry you have to join us here, but you're in the right place for support and advice. I was diagnosed with stage 1, grade 3, ER+, HER- a year ago and had three ops but I'm through the other side. It felt like a potential death sentence at first - it is so scary. It's tough for you having to go through another op, just as you were getting over the first, but it's good your surgeon is being thorough. I have a neighbour who had total axillary node clearance and she is fine now. Small comfort, I know.

Hi Andeezegirl. Sorry you're going through the mill. It's perfectly normal to worry that you have cancer everywhere after the shock of the diagnosis. It's hard to trust your body again - we lose all sense of control. 11 months on, I still have the occasional wave of panic that the cancer has spread. All I can say is that it does get more manageable. Sharing your feelings on here is great because there's always someone else who's experienced something similar. As far as decisions are concerned, it takes a while to process all the info. I found I could only make one decision at a time. Good luck.

Hi. I've got an aloe Vera that's got v little added to it. I've used the raw plant for skin complaints in the past. I've had pains in ribs and back of shoulder. Also have possible radiotherapy pneumonitis - get short of breath on exertion and cough up clear phlegm. I was reasonably fit and healthy before BC! To be honest, I've mainly felt worse since rads ended, partly due to bad reactions to hormone suppressants. Things seem to be improving slowly now, though. I wasn't prepared for the massive impact treatment would have on my energy levels.

Hi Ellie. I was very lucky during rads - I used aloe Vera gel twice a day and didn't have any serious problems. My skin went red, then very brown, and I couldn't wear a bra because the skin broke down under the breast about a week after rads. Some of the creams they suggest at the hospital irritate sensitive skin so I didn't use those. I've also been taking supplements, including vitamin D. My boob is still quite sore some days, even though I finished rads in August, but that seems to be par for the course. How are you feeling otherwise?

Hi Tandy. Macmillan can offer financial support and grants. I would contact them. There are other organisations that offer grants for people going through cancer, eg Liverpool Life.

Hi Blossom. So sorry you have to join us here. I am also 58 and had a similar experience to you last March. I had a routine mammogram, which revealed a tumour - I couldn't feel a lump because it was deep in my breast. I was told during my biopsy that it was almost certainly cancer. Like you, I was absolutely shocked and almost had a meltdown. Waiting for detailed results was the worst time. I cried, worried about my children (I'm a single parent), and swore at someone at work! You'll feel better when you get your results because then you'll know what you're dealing with. I was put on Letrozole after radiotherapy but had to come off it because of severe bladder pain and blood in my urine. It's a hormone suppressant, so it's likely to affect your emotions, but some people find things settle down after a while. You're bound to be imagining the worst at the moment, but many people with even advanced breast cancer live fulfilling lives for years. There's always someone on here who can support you and there's a great helpline too. Best of luck with your results.

Hi Tandy. Good luck with your appointments today. I asked my oncologist how much each treatment added to my chance of survival. Not everyone wants to know this, but it helps you evaluate whether it's worth going through, and for me, knowledge is power. For example, chemo would have added 4% to my survival but my allergies led the team to recommend I didn't have it.

Hi Tandy. You can ask for a copy of all letters to be sent to you; you'll get them at the same time as the GP. It's useful to do this because they sometimes have a bit more detail than the consultant discusses with you.

Hi Name Me. Waiting to find out how bad things are was the absolute worst part for me. I was told by the radiographer she was almost certain I had BC. I was then put in a room with a box of hankies and a nurse who asked about my kids and told me to get help looking after them. I spent the next few days thinking I was dying and nearly going out of my mind. When I found out I was stage one, grade 3, I was actually relieved. I won't say don't worry because it is inevitably worrying, but once you have the facts you will be able to cope. There's always help on here. x

Hi Sissy. I used aloe Vera gel and it worked for me - got sensitive skin so have to be careful what I use. Also have one boob several sizes smaller than the other. Asked bcn re prostheses and they said just to wear a T-shirt bra, but I found one cup dented as it was too big. Asked again and got a prosthetic to tuck into bra. It's got the texture of a jellyfish but looks fine if I wear anything fitted.

Hi Charlie. I think everyone's different re telling others. I waited till I knew how serious it was before telling my family because I didn't want to worry anyone unnecessarily, though I told a close friend. Then I told people at work - felt like it helped me to normalise it and process it. Didn't make any FB announcements so some people still don't know. Horrible telling kids but they were ok, though not helpful!

Welcome, Charlie. I found waiting for results the worst bit - almost had a total meltdown in the waiting room. Nearly screamed out loud. I'm normally a calm person. When I got the results (stage 1, grade 3), I was relieved, strange as that might sound, because I expected to be told i was terminal, thanks to a bcn telling me to get help looking after the children. Once you know exactly what you're facing, you'll be able to prepare yourself. Feel free to rant, moan, despair or whatever on here; you'll always find support. Good luck.

Hi Jen. You're bound to feel down at times with a long haul ahead of you - I think we sometimes underestimate the psychological toll of diagnosis and treatment, and the exhaustion caused by treatment doesn't help our mental state. Personally I don't identify with the "fight" against cancer, though I know some women experience it that way and it works for them to feel like they're battling it. I felt like the cancer was part of me and that I had to adapt to its presence and find ways to make my cells healthier. Take care. Marcella

Hi Becky. Just saw this thread. I had terrible side effects on Anastrazole - crippling joint pain and bladder pain. I had to stop taking it. It might be worth letting the oncologist know so they can consider switching your mum to a different medication. Otherwise, supplements might help - though my onc is dead against them.
