I had my 1st mammogram (after a lumpectomy and 4 weeks of radiotherapy) on the 2nd Dec and was told I would get the results in 2 to 3 weeks. It’s now 4 weeks and heard nothing. I called the nurse this morning and was initially told it was reported but she couldn’t see the results then she rang me back to say it isn’t reported. I am now very anxious and my imagination is thinking of all sorts of reasons why I haven’t heard.
Am I being neurotic?
Hi @loubilou no you are not being neurotic, it’s understandable to have a concern but there may be a simple explanation which the nurse has not been forthcoming with.
After my first annual mammogram after active treatment, I was sitting outside whilst the radiologist was checking to see that the images were clear enough. She came out to tell me I could go but then asked me if I wanted to see the images, which I did. She explained what they look for and that mine looked fine BUT, and this is the salient part, all images have to be looked at by two radiologists so that nothing is missed. If the two cannot agree on the results it is bumped up to a third, more senior radiologist. At the time she was the only radiologist there so said the images would be reviewed the following week and I would get a letter two weeks later. The letter never came but I felt that everything was fine as she’d been through the images with me. On the second mammogram, this year, there were no radiologists available as it was the end of July and they were all on summer holidays! I did get a letter through 4 weeks later. All fine.
So I expect that there haven’t been two radiologists available to review your images over the Christmas period. This seems to be par for the course in the NHS at the moment. This is far more likely than there being anything sinister. In fact, if there was something sinister I would expect the one radiologist who has seen it to escalate the issue rather than sit on it. I hope you get the results soon.
Thank you so much. That makes me feel a bit less worried. It’s easy for people to say no news is good news but it’s nice to hear from someone who has been in the same position
