2nd hand smoke/Radiotheraphy.

Hello everyone, I wondered if anyone who has had radiotheraphy treatment was told to avoid inhailing other peoples ciggie smoke? I finished treatment in 2005 and since then will not tollerate people smoking around me, alot of people think i am making a fuss about nothing.I am sure i remember a nurse saying that once you have had Radio for B.C it weakens your lungs and you are more prone to lung problems? maybe i dreamt it. I shall still chase smokers away (best be on the safe side)Don’t get me wrong if people want to smoke that is up to them, just wish people would be a bit more condiderate when in a none smokers company!!!would appreciate your comments, Love and best wishes to you all. I can understand how you feel although none of my team have said this to me, although it does make sense, I was told about the ribs being more prome to fractures & I was told that a tiny square of my lung gets zapped so as to warn any radiographer when having future Xrays as it will show as a tiny shadow on the Xray. Maybe your treatment was more widespread ?

If after rads I found that i found it difficult to breath or I got chesty round other smokers I would deffinately worry about it.

But is it such a problem nowadays?? All public spaces are now smoke free. And i cannot remember the last time I was in someones house when people did not go outside to smoke. In fact I find it a bit annnoying, there you all are, after a good meal, enjoying a glass of wine and a good old chat and half the table suddenly up and leave for a cigarette, completely breaking the mood.

But there again, never thought about the effect of rads on the lungs so I might change my tune

I am lucky that most of my friends do not smoke, and, yes it’s great to go out for a drink knowing that the pub/restaurant is smoke free and i don’t come home smelling like an ashtray, it was brill when the smoking ban came in.My treatment was not wide spread, but i guess if they zap a bit of your lung when they give Radio, it must make you wary?? I think once you have had a cancer diagnosis most people become a bit paranoid about there health, thankfully i have been okay for nearly 6 years, but i still panic if i get the odd ache, cough, etc. i guess maybe i am just a born worrier!!!

Hi Kippy, I don’t remember anyone telling me to avoid smoke, but I do anyway - very inconvenient as my husband’s a smoker. Although he hasn’t given up he’s been great - he doesn’t smoke in the car anymore and never smokes in the same room as me. As for worrying about every little ache etc, I think that’s something we all do - as time goes on I’m getting a bit better at handling it! All the best, Squirrel
