2ww referral

Hi, i noticed a thickening of tissue in my lower right breast after a period of very itchy skin. My right breast feels heavy and the only way i can describe it is, simialr to when your milk comes in when breast feeding. I can constantly feel my right breast like a weird sensation. Im not overly worried i know this could be fatty tissue. i saw my GP yesterday and she felt like it was more a ljmp as has an edge to it. I can not feel that. I have been referred to the 2ww suspected breast cancer in under 40 referral but the date is 4 weeks away. Im 1 day in and already going a little crazy.

Did anyone else have similar symptoms or been under 40??

Hi Donna,

Thank you for posting.

Breast changes can happen for many reasons. They may be due to hormonal changes as part of your monthly cycle or due to benign conditions (not cancer). You’ll probably find your breasts change quite a bit throughout your life. Breast cancer is uncommon in women in their 20s and 30s so the itching, thickening, and heaviness you have noticed are more likely to be because of one of the reasons mentioned above rather than cancer.

It is understandable that you are feeling anxious about the wait for your appointment at the breast clinic especially when you’ve been told that your appointment will be in 4 weeks time rather than the 2 weeks you were expecting. As @Shi says it is natural to worry at times like this and it can help to call our helpline to talk this through or if you have any further questions.

The 2 week wait standard for GP referrals to breast clinics is being replaced by the faster diagnosis standard which aims to either diagnose or rule out a cancer diagnosis within 28 days of referral. You may find our blog about this change helpful in explaining the reasons for behind this change. Knowing what to expect at the breast clinic might help.

As mentioned above, please do call our helpline if you would like further support. The helpline team have time to listen to your concerns, talk things through and signpost you to more support and information. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000, (Relay UK - prefix 18001).

If you would prefer one of our nurses to call you. To do this, please complete this form ticking the box agreeing to a call back.

Our usual opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm and 9am - 1pm on Saturday.

Out of hours you can leave a message and we will call you back when we next open.

Best wishes

Katy
