Hi there,
I’m now 6 months post diagnosis and waiting for a third attempt to get clear margins. After the 2nd op another smaller tumour was found in the margin. They said one last try then masectomy.
It’s 3 weeks till the op, then 6 weeks for the results. If margin is clear, I can finally be sent to oncology but that is a 4 to 6 week wait too. By the time I start chemo I will be over 8 months since diagnosis. Is this typical? I feel terrible.
Hello bluesatsuma
Thanks for posting. It sounds as if you are having a difficult time.
Going through multiple surgeries and waiting for results can be stressful, and it is natural to feel worried about the time this is taking.
Although each situation is different, waiting longer to start chemotherapy typically happens when further surgery is needed to ensure clear margins.
If you haven’t done so already, you may want to discuss your concerns with your breast care nurse or treatment team. They may be able to put your mind at rest.
If you’re unable to resolve your concern, you may want to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). You can find your nearest PALS office on the NHS website.
This is a confidential service for patients, their families, and carers. They can help resolve concerns related to health matters, explain, and handle complaints procedures and use feedback to help influence change.
We would encourage you to make use of the helpline, we usually find we can help more by talking things through
Best wishes
