A healthy diet on the rocky road ahead......

hi everyone.
In the 24 days since I was diagnosed I have taken comfort in the biscuit tin, ice cream tub, and pretty much any other nice treat going. But now have decided to try and draw a line under the sugar rush and be healthy - ish(!) during the rocky road ahead!!! Any tips?

Hi Neadi,

I expect most people reading you post will empathise - and a few days (OK three weeks) of comfort eating is quite understandable. I am sure you already know the stuff about healthy eating, and don’t really need us to tell you, what you need is come encouragement. In my view - others will differ - it’s best not to ‘ban’ anything or you will only crave it, but at the same time, I tend not to keep the things like buscuits in my house. Aim at five fruit & veg a day - remember that fruit juice at breakfast is one, a bowl of yummy berries is another, etc. Make sure you have breakfast, it will help boost you in the morning. Chicken and fish are better than too much red meat. A jacket spud with beans and cheese, or tuna, or chilli is a great lunch. Planning your menus will probably reduce the likelihood of junk eating. I find if I cook from scratch the food tastes much nicer and has the advantage of keeping me busy whilst I make it! Oh yes, and allow yourself some treats - edible or otherwise.

It is very early days for you, and your mind will be overflowing with anxiety, but you will get there, just be gentle with yourself… and if that means a small tub of ice-cream or a handful of biscuits once in a while, so be it.

hi neadi i too have hit the rocky road i have put on a stone in the last 8 weeks since i first found my lump, i have gone back to my zumba class but i am baking all the time making the most of the time till i am having chemo. im trying to do healthy snacks i made courgette chocolate cake, so at least im getting veg with my snacks. lol pavlova topped with fruit so fruit too. lol

Hi Neadi:
I was diagnosed on the 25th September and am having my op on the 9th November (the medical wheel seems to turn exceedingly slowly). I also did the same as you, but quickly realised that as treatment was going to be slow coming I needed to help myself as well. I’ve just read an excellent book called ‘THE BREAST CANCER prevention and recovery diet’ - written by Suzannah Oliver which I would highly recommend. You can by it on Amazon secondhand for just a couple of pounds.
Best wishes for the future x

Thanks!!!
Less eating! More action!!

Hiya Neadi,
i have to say all I fancied was stodgy a things during my chemo. Now chemo is done I am trying to get back on track food wise. Mainly healthy eating. I try and eat organic food as much as I can and fruit and veg wise try and eat what’s seasonal. I have also upped my water in take. I am really bad at drinking water but I found the more water I drink less I want to eat ( plus it helpless during chemo).
i really have tried to move away from anything processed. If fancy a sweet treat I have nakd bars which are yummy ( the banana one is). Or things like muller light yoghurt with fruit.
My oncologist positively encouraged exercise even if it was only walking. He said it will help with fatigue.
best of luck with it…and the odd bit of choc doesn’t matter…it releases endorphins apparently so is good for us

I’m thinking soup is going to be the way forward for me - you can make scrummy soup full of good veg etc but it still works as a comfort food now it’s all getting a bit cold and rainy.

I too have been eating far too much since my diagnosis so will be joining you on the healthy eating train from now on. It was my OH’s birthday last week so we ate out at Frankie & Bennys for that - but we also had carvery, macdonalds, chinese take away and then went to a family do yesterday with lots of buffet food and cake. It has got to stop!!

I hear you!!!
We’ll support each other along the way…!!!
