A thought on Pink October for comments

Ladies, as is well discussed already, many are dreading Pink October. I guess many of us on this forum will also have some sort od Messenger/Facebook/Twitter type accounts. I am intending posting a status update regularly through October as follows:

"October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, but for many women this is not pink, but is very black. Each year over 12,000 women (and men) still die of this disease. It is NOT curable, but treatments and outcomes have improved in recent years due to the research and support helped by charities such as these, so please give generously, however you choose, and keep yourself checked and informed. "

I hope this hits the right note, but would take on board any comments on the wording, or the idea in general…

Like this and I have twitter and facebook accounts and your thoughts are how it is. Sometimes, like the tickled pink campaign, it can all be a little frivolous when we are talking about peoples lives with this awful disease. As you say lives are lost so how do we feel - tickled pink???

Well done. xxxx

Well done Crazydancer! brilliantly said. Very to the point without being over critical. I am hoping to run the London Marathon to raise funds for BCC next April and I’ll put this paragraph on my facebook page in my requests for sponsorship…

I was going to suggest that everyone who has a Facebook type account use this as their status on 1st october, and ask friends and family to do the same to show their support. Hopefully this may filter through and give a slightly more balanced view. You can’t really sum it all up in a few short sentances, but I hoped I’d hit the right note of “its not all pink and fluffy” with the “give us your money” idea…and it may provoke further discussion to educate people more on the real effects of this nasty disease.

I don’t have a problem with pink per se, as it is instantly recognisable, but it is difficult to make this campaign profitable without being too alarmist. Women do want to get involved and I suppose they want to have some fun whilst fund raising and I suppose we can’t blame them for that. However, I do think bc is trivialised and I think you’ve got it spot on Shannon.
