I have been taking 100 mg of Abemaciclib 2 x day for 4 months and have been put on a low fibre diet. I am finding the diet difficult as I can’t eat a lot things that are good i.e berries, green veg. Is anyone else been put on a low fibre diet whilst taking Abemaciclib?
Hi, no I haven’t been put on a low fibre diet. When I was first diagnosed with cancer my oncologist discussed research that said if I required antibiotics during chemotherapy it killed off good bacteria in the gut and there was a thought that having good gut bacteria helped the bodies immune system to fight cancer.
With this in mind I researched foods to improve my gut bacteria and started to have kefir daily. This was March 2023. I commenced Abemaciclib October 2023. Since January I stopped having daily kefir as to be honest I was just bored eating it daily. However my episodes of diarrhoea increased during this period and once I recommenced daily kefir my gut and episodes of diarrhoea have improved. This may be coincidence but I am continuing to have daily kefir now and so far I am still managing 150mgs of Abemaciclib. I eat a relatively high fibre diet with organic porridge and blueberries each morning and have sweet potatoes with my evening meal. I know our gut are different and certain foods affect us differently but this is my experience. I still get episodes of diarrhoea once or twice a week but Abemaciclib is a harsh drug, let us hope it’s effective.
@summer , Hi, I started abemaciclib 150 mg 2x daily in June 2023. After one week, I suffered stage 4 diarrhea. My dosage was reduced to 100 mg 2x daily. Thankfully the diarrhea stopped, but I find that my stomach is very sensitive. e.g. a drink of cold water will trigger diarrhear for 2 days. When diarrhea hits, I take loperamide (anti-diarrhea med) and this works like magic, in fact it works so wonderfully well that I suffer from constipation usually for 2 days after taking loperamide. Is diarrhea the reason for your low fibre diet? Have you suffered diarrhea these 4 months? It’s just a shame that you have to avoid nutritious foods you love such a good berries. Hope you can find some resolution. Hugs.
Hi Siggi, thanks for your reply. I started on 100 mgs 2 x day as I had Cdiff and very bad diarrhoea last year. The low fibre diet is for this reason. It is not easy foregoing foods I like and are nutitious so I am slowly reintroducing them to my diet. So far so good. Wishng you well x
