Additional/private homecare/nursing during Chemo?

Hi

I am new here. My mum had Breast Cancer confirmed on Friday. She will have chemo first (starting during the next couple of weeks), then surgery.

She is 76 (77 in June) and very independent. She loves 45mins than hour away from me. I will offer for her to stay with us during parts of her treatment, but she generally feels much more comfortable in her own home - secant see her going for it. She has IBS, COPD (mild), Fibromyalgia (and low pain threshold) and two recent hospitalisations (one after another) for lung problems due to breathing in vomit. I am worried that the chemo will hit her very hard (because of these other health issues). Me moving in with her is not practical.

Mum has Bupa and will be having her chemo and surgery privately. I don’t know if they can provide extra impatient care if the chemo hits her particularly hard?

Are there any options for private nursing care at home? Either “on call” or regular (daily during the bad week? On call during the other two weeks) visits. A skilled nurse who can check up on her and give her reassurance?

Thanks
QT

Hi QTpie

I’m sorry to read of your Mums diagnosis, its sounds like you have some concerns with regard to her having chemo.  May I suggest that whilst you wait for the other users to reply with their experiences you might find it helpful to talk things through with a member of staff on the BCC helpline.  Here you can share your thoughts and questions with someone who will offer you a listening ear as well as emotional support and practical information.  The number to call is 0808 800 6000 and lines are open weekdays 9 to 5pm and Saturday

10 to 2pm.

Best wishes Sam, BCC Facilitator
