Advice on private consultation while waiting for NHS appointment

I saw my GP on Monday about a firm thickening/lump in my right breast, and she made a non-urgent referral to the breast clinic in Glasgow. She said they see everyone promptly, but I don’t know what that is in terms of weeks.  I’m considering seeing a consultant at a private hospital, just for examination and mammogram/US if necessary, because I think they can diagnose benign causes without biopsy, and these things are mostly benign.  Is it OK to request tests up to a certain point, but stay on the NHS waiting list in case I need further tests?  Fortunately I’ve been stranded at home and not in work yesterday and today due to snow, because I’m struggling to concentrate and really desperate to nip it in the bud.:smileyfrustrated:

Hi Greenjava,

There are certainly other ladies here who have gone privately for tests as you describe, but then have gone back to the NHS if diagnosed. You are right, mostly any breast change turns out Not to be bc & if it’s clear what it is on mammo &/or ultrasound, then a biopsy is not necessary.

I don’t know what the position is in Scotland, but most of us here are referred under the 2 week rule & are seen within this time frame. The waiting is so stressful though & it’s wholly understandable that you would want to get this sorted out as soon as possible.

Hopefully, someone who has gone privately at this stage, will be along to share their experience.

great name, btw

If  you are feeling worried and it sounds as if you. Are…lll, yes get the referral brought forward, gps are excellent usually and it sounds as if she isn’t worried, but even tho it’s unlikely from what she says, people can still get missed. And I’m not concerned about the delay, more concerned that you don’t have to sit with the worry.

love to you
