Advice shaving my head

Hi everyone!

I’d like to shave my head before it falls out with chemo in a few weeks, perhaps to keep a little control on this cancer that seems to have taken over my life!

I’m going to donate my hair to the Little Princess Trust so it doesn’t go to waste.

Has anyone else done this?

If so, did you use your regular hairdresser? Was it cut in a hair band and then shaved short?

Thanks in advance for advice :heart_hands:

Hey @alannah172

I don’t know if you’ve seen the documentary Sarah Beeny Vs. Cancer on Channel 4 but she did this for the Little Princess Trust and got her kids to chop it into a short crop first. When her hair starts shedding a couple of weeks later, she has the remainder shaved off camera.

Link to the documentary is below - skip to 06:45 for the hair cutting scene if you’re not bothered about watching the whole doc, but it is an awesome watch if you’ve a spare hour.

All the best. x

Thank you so much for the recommendation, I hadn’t heard of it, but I’ll watch it this evening. I think I’ll find the whole programme interesting!

You’re very welcome and I’m sure you will. She’s an absolute powerhouse and her family are just amazing. Enjoy!

I watched it! Thank you so much for the recommendation!

I hadn’t realised Sarah lives near me so we’re at the same hospital and hospice in Yeovil. It’s made me so much calmer as I can see the things she had done are what I’m about to have.

My plan was to shave my head after my first chemo, exactly the same as well, it’s like a sign I had the right idea :+1: xx

Great stuff! I found her so relatable and it sounds like you did too. So glad it helped and good luck with the hair care.

Hi, my hair was short, grey and layered anyway and I planned to have my head shaved, which I did. I was advised to have it shaved with clippers set to number 1 or 2 rather than shaved right down to skin as this could lead to blocked hair follicles, whereas leaving that tiny bit on the scalp would mean the the hairs would come out properly as you washed and dried your head. So I got my usual hairdresser to do this as it seemed to make sense, but I don’t really know the likelihood of blocked follicles resulting from shaving down to skin. :woman_shrugging:t3:

Hair certainly came back really thick, initially v tightly curled but went back to normal texture gradually.

All the best xx

Thank you for telling us your experience

Im going to shave it to grade 1 as my BCN said exactly what you mentioned and said if it’s to the scalp it’s too uncomfortable and not good for the scalp.

All the best you you as well xx
