After chemo

Hi

does anyone have any idea about how long after you finish chemo you can start eating all the banned food like salad, soft cheese, take aways. Also how long do you need to be contacting the chemo suite etc if you think you might have a temperature/infection.

I finished my last chemo four weeks ago tomorrow.

Hello Sheba56

Whilst waiting for replies to your post maybe you would like to give our free helpline a call and have a chat to one of the staff. The free phone number is 0808 800 6000 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9.00 to 5.00 and Saturday 10.00 to 2.00.

Best wishes

Hi sheba56… I asked the very same question 2 years ago, as my daughter got married 4 weeks after my final chemo and I wanted to enjoy the whole occasion! The answer my Onc gave was (only remember as I wrote it in my diary!!).

“How long chemo drugs stay in the body after the final treatment varies from person to person (just like everything else about chemo lol). Generally chemo drugs (I had FEC-T) are present in the body for a few hours to several days, so quite a short time. However, the effect of the drugs on your body can last a long time” (cheers!!!). She was lovely really.

With regard to raised temperature I would assume that you should still be vigilant for the 3 weeks post last chemo…however safest to contact someone if you are concerned.

Hope that helps…now go out and treat yourself to everything you fancy to eat and enjoy

Take care x

Sorry am I being stupid, but no-one told me about banned foods ?? I am on my 6th chemo, 2nd docetaxel.

Great that you have finished ! Xx

Hi Maryland, Ah ok, so far I have only caught one infection, laryngitis not food related. But yes like you, everything tastes awful, so just soup for me ! X

Thanks to all who replied. I was given a long list of banned foods which is strange compared to others. As I ended up in hospital after last chemo at two weeks with a sore throat which they took very seriously I am still feeling a little nervous. Have started having things like soft cheese and salad that I haven’t prepared. It is so nice to be able to eat out again.
