After skin sparing mastectomy and implant reconstruction

Hi
I had skin sparing mastectomy 21st January and doing really well. How long does the swelling and hardness last for? I’ve noticed it’s a little red under the breast but think this might be from my bras which I’ve been wearing 24/7. It looks a little red but not really painful. I’m due to fly to Malta 1st April and hoping all ok x

Hi @moz61,

Thanks for your post.

Swelling and hardness soon after a mastectomy with immediate implant reconstruction is common and does usually settle over time. It can take 6–8 weeks to recover, however this can vary for each individual. Your treatment team can tell you if it will be fine to fly on the 1st April.

It is important you speak to your breast care nurse or treatment team about the redness you have noticed on your breast. They can assess and advise on further management if required. If you think the redness may be because of your bra you may find our bras after surgery information helpful.
