My mum starts her Chemo on Monday 24th Oct and she’s been told that she will lose her hair quite quick so she wants to get herself a wig pretty sharpish,
We have no idea where to start! So hoping i can get some recommendations? I only know of 1 local wig shop but if anyone has had a great wig from the internet i would be grateful to hear from you!
Sorry to hear your Mum’s likely to lose her hair so quickly, but it sounds as if she’s got a very caring & supportive daughter looking out for her!
I didn’t have chemo myself so didn’t have the same problem (tho’ my hair’s been getting thinner for the last few years - nothing to do with the BC & won’t ever regrow:-(
Hasn’t your Mum’s BCN given her any info about wigs? Every time I went to see mine she had wig leaflets & info on her desk - might be worth while for your Mum to give her a ring tomorrow.I believe also you can get help from NHS paying for wigs.
hi just a thought if your Uk based the onc unit should offer a free wig service and they are not to bad, or i had my heair cut short as i felt it would not be as much shock when i lost mine, huggs to you and your mom
susn
i was told my hair will probably go on days 10~14 after my first chemo so to get my wig sorted before chemo starts…my key worker gave me a letter to take to a local shop for a free one :0)
you are entitled to one free on the nhs if you have chemo so do urge your mum to ask :0)
I was told about a site called ‘Long for hair’. It will give you info on where to go in your area. The people have been trained specifically for ladies who are going through chemo. I saw a lovely lady in Didcot who supplied me with a beautiful wig. She also gave me lots of great advice. The wig really was a big help for my moral. I paid about £200 for mine, but prices did vary a lot. And I didn’t go to a hairdresser for a year, so actually saved money! I wore the wig for about 6 months. I had my 1st hair cut 2 weeks ago!
Hope it goes well for her. Good luck for the search. xx
My experience with wigs is that you tend to get what you pay for. You can get wigs for around £30-40 which look good but the net framework is pretty scratchy, even with a wig cap. Add hot flushes into the mix and all round I found it pretty uncomfortable.
Most hospitals have a wig service or can advise you where to go. You can also claim the VAT back. I would advise her to try a few and to buy as a good quality as she can afford thinking about how much she is going to wear it. When you think that a good cut and blow dry can easily cost £40, a wig that can last you a year at £100+ doesn’t seem so expensive.
Love to you and your mum. Hope things go well for you.
I thought all hospitals at least had a wig service even if it isnt free. My chemo nurse referred me & i was seen within the week & the wig was free. It’s acrylic but looks very good & natural. I saw someone i know yesterday & she commented on how nice my hair looked. I hesitated for a second then told her it was a wig. She was gobsmacked, lol. I think mine was from Trendco. Hope u get your mum sorted out soon.
