Air travel, security & prothesis

Hi, I am on my way to Florida this week! Hurrah! Will summarise my travel insurance battle when I get back!
Worried about going through security with prothesis. Have read BCC pages. Is it better to travel with it in carry on and wear foam form thing? Thinking of the new X-ray scanner things. Don’t want to be worrying!! Will swimming prothesis be ok in hold luggage? Anyone with experience? Thanks, Gx

Hi Gemdancer,
Great that you’ve managed to get insurance! I have no experience of the xray machines you mentioned - I’ve a feeling that I’ve been through an airport where you had the option to use them but I haven’t been anywhere where they’ve been compulsory. I’m pretty sure that I’ve taken a swimming prosthesis in hold luggage before without problems but I guess you could also check with whoever you got it from.
Best wishes for a great trip,
Tournesol.

I used to wear a contact prosthesis (had a re-occurance in January 2012 so not wearing it now) and last year didn’t even think about it when we went to Las Vegas.
No problems at Gatwick but had to go through the scanner on way home from Las Vegas airport. The lady guard said I’d have to be patted down and I told her I was wearing a prosthesis, she did the pat down and then she wiped my palms with a pad and that was checked by the computer.

Whole process didn’t take very long but it was in full view of the whole Departure Lounge, no privacy there !!
