- I had an allergic reaction to paxaital on first infusion. Was then changed to abraxane ,which thankfully has been fine.I have 2 more weekly abraxane left to complete my 4 cycles of this.I will then move onto 4 3 weekly cycles of EC.Im just really apprehensive I wanted to ask if anyone who has experienced an allergic reaction to paxaital on moved onto abraxane has then had EC with no allergic reaction.Thank you for any information for this x
I was also switched to Abraxane after an allergic reaction to paclitaxel. I had this after EC so a little different to you, but still, I didnât have any reactions to the EC.
Antihistamines arenât given routinely before EC infusions in the same way that they are given before paclitaxel so I think in general EC is less likely to provoke an allergic reaction. So hopefully you wonât have a problem! Wishing you all the best.

Hi Pollyann,
Thank you so much for your replyđ.Yes EC is what i will be having, that is gd news hopefully it will go without any hiccups.I wish you well on your journey xx
Hi @budsbails2301 - I have just come across your post after searching for posts on this topic. I am moving to abraxane after an allergic reaction to paclitaxel yesterday. It was the scariest thing & I canât stop thinking about it! have you found the side effects from abraxane? And how did you tolerate EC?
@sunshineandunicorns Hi,im sorry to hear you had a reaction to paxaital.Hope you are feeling okay today.I agree it was the scariest experience Ive ever had. It took 45 minutes for them to bring it under control. But the amazing news is no reaction to Abraxane ,what people dont know it is the solution that the paxaital is put in that causes the allergic reaction. The Abraxane is in a solution like your blood. So the body doesnt see it as a foreign object. Also the Abraxane looks likes breast milkâ:rofl:.Honestly I know where you are as I was petrified before my first Abraxane but it was absolutely fine.I now have 2 cycles of EC left then the chemo journy is finishedâ:grin: Also EC no allergic reaction eitherâ:grin:Sending you a big Welsh Cwtch xx
Hi @sunshineandunicorns, hope you donât mind me butting in. I had abraxane too and felt fine after it. Heartburn was the only real side effect I had. Oncologist said abraxane is much more expensive than paclitaxel or docetaxel so itâs not routinely given.
Thankyou @Pollyann & @budsbails2301 makes sense why thereâs so little info from people directly to be found. Do you mind me asking how quickly hair loss started on abraxane? I am not so ready for that element, really need to get sorted!
@sunshineandunicorns My hair started shedding 3 weeks after 1st chemotherapy.I didnt cold cap as i suffer migraines.I shaved it after 5 weeks as it was more upsetting seeing it coming out each time i touched my hair or looked down at my clothes. If i was to give any pearls of wisdom,i would say take it a day at a time with your treatment, it seems so overwhelming at the start. You will get through this xx
I had four rounds of EC chemo before Abraxane. I used the cold cap for two of the rounds, so my hair loss was gradual at first, but it started around 2.5 weeks after my first infusion.
I never ended up shaving my head as this was during the pandemic and I didnât have any clippers! But it pretty much fell out altogether after I stopped using the cold cap.
Also agree with budsbails on taking it one step at a time. I used to be the type of person who read the leaflet that came with the paracetamol packet! But there were so many possible side effects with the various parts of cancer treatment that it felt overwhelming to me, so I focused on taking it day by day.
