I searched for this topic and found it but it has been closed.
After listening to last week’s Jeremy Vine radio show and the report about the aluminium in deodorants/anti perspirants and the latest findings and link to BC I have decided to try aluminium-free deodorants.
I have tried the crystal stick type but don’t find it to be all that good. Janie Lee Grace was on the show and said there were hundreds of aluminium-frees but although I have seen a few I can’t say I’ve seen hundreds and in any case I don’t know if they really work.
Can anyone recommend one that really does work?
*I have read the statement on the news page of this site about the latest findings
I picked one up from Sainsbury’s called Bionsen - I think you can also get it from chemists. It has a sticker on it saying Aluminium Free. I used it for a while and then just went back to my old one not sure why but hope this helps.
I use the same on that Jetty mentioned, I got mine from Boots and it was the cheapest out of the Alu free range, takes a while for it to dry so put it on a few mins before putting your top on but its effective and cheap.
Never even heard of this til in hosp after mastectomy. a lady who was totally knowledgeable about all these sort of things spoke about aluminium free deodrant.
I have used BIONSEN since.
Rx
I found some on the internet called “Crystal Spring”. They do a pump spray as well as the crystal rock. I ordered it yesterday and got an email to say it has been mailed today. I’ll let you know how I get on
i was told by the physio to use a non anti perspirant deodorant, so i used that Bionsen, i found i just dripped sweat everywhere, when i said about it to my onc and bc nurse, they said that there was no evidence that anti persperants were a factor in breast cancer, i am back on what i have used for year,s but this thread has made me think i might try pitrok and see if thats any good for me.
Since I was diagnosed with BC in February, I have read that the following increase your chances of breast cancer:
Staying OUT of the sun,
Being around dogs,
Eating grapefruit,
Not doing housework,
Using anti-perspirant,
… and a whole host of others that I can’t remember thanks to Tamoxifen!
Everyone gives you advice and it is hard to filter it all … I’ve decided not to get too hung up on it all as there is life out there to live and I REFUSE to let this thing RULE… just let my body tel me …
For those who are interested, today’s Daily Mail has a big article on the subject showing what chemicals are in popular deodorants and focussing on aluminium/paraben free types too
Hi Alison
The ones that are listed as free from aluminium and parabens are:
Dr Hauschka Deodorant Fresh
Jason’s Tea Tree deodorant
Lush Aromacreme
Neal’s Yard Remedies Lemon and Coriader Deodorant
Origins No Offense
Tisserand Lavender and Lemon deodorant
Weleda Wild Rose deodorant
Yves Saint Laurent Paris Deodorant
Pitrok that some ladies have mentioned above apparently contains Ammonium Alum which the article states is a crystal form of aluminium. The guy who carried out the research that was mentioned at the start of this thread, Dr Chris Exley of Keele University is quoted as saying “aluminium found in breast tissue is as likely to come from these (ammonium alum) based natural products as it is from conventional anti-perspirants”.
I guess we all have to make our own minds up on this kind of research
I bought Bionsen and can I just say I thought it was rubbish . I have never had a problem with BO before but it just does not work and yuo end up very smelly!
Again quoting from the article
" A 2004 study by Dr Philippa Dabre, a senior lecturer in oncology at the University of Reading found evidence of parabens in breast cancer. (she said) Parabens can mimic the action of oestrogen and there is a link between oestrogen and breast cancer"
“Dr Dabre who has spen 25 years studying oestrogen action in breast cancer says that while there is no proof yet that any of these ingredients can cause breast cancer, it does not sound sensible to apply a mixture of chemicals under the arms and around the breast as this could cause a build up of toxic overload over the years”
On the otherside of the argument, later in the article, Dr Christopher Flower, director-general of he Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association says"Only vanishingly small amounts of aluminium are absorbed through the skin - 0.01 percent. You get 50 times this from food." He also says “The potency of parabens in products such as deodorants is a million times lower than in the birth control pill and that is considered safe”.
