Am I overthinking

Hi I’m Sarah
I noticed a few months back that my left breast and nipple was itchy, I didn’t think much of it and just thought due to being 47 it would be hormone changes. The itching has got worse and I have small bumps around the nipple. Two days ago I noticed there is two thick line dints on the bottom/side of the breast. My breast feels a little different behind the nipple area too. My left armpit is also itchy and I keep finding small finger type bruises. I’m going to call my doctors in the morning but my head has been a mess over the weekend and I don’t want to be googling my symptoms as I know that will make it worse. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.x

Hi @sarah221 it is incredibly stressful to discover anomalies with our bodies and it is human nature to let our minds run riot and to imagine the worst so well done on holding off from Googling your symptoms. It wouldn’t be helpful at this stage.

I don’t have experience of your symptoms per se but I can tell you that there can be all sorts of reasons for changes to the breast, not everything is cancer. Having said that it IS important to impress upon your GP (or the receptionist when you phone the surgery) that you are very concerned about changes to your breast and need to be seen so that a referral, if necessary, is made to a specialist as soon as possible.

Well done for finding us at Breast Cancer Now. You will find a lot of support here if you feel you need it. As anyone who has been active on the forum will attest, the worst thing is to have worries and suspicions about breast health and have to wait for investigation and results. It can take several weeks to be in a position in which you know what you will be dealing with and that is the most difficult time of all. Of course it may be nothing serious - let’s hope it is not - but you are likely to have a stressful wait until you know for sure. Once you do know what the diagnosis is, it is amazing how quickly the frustration turns to resolve. You can come back to the forum at any time to get support from women who have been where you are now. I think it would also be good for you to phone the BC Now nurses on 0808 800 6000 to get some perspective. The service is free, confidential and unhurried. I guarantee you’ll feel better having talked to them.

I wish you a quick and positive resolution.

Thank you @Tigress for replying. I can see that there is a lot of support here on this site. My doctors are really good and will probably get me in tomorrow to see the doctor. I’m just hoping that I’m being over cautious and there’s nothing to worry about.

Hi @sarah221

I agree with everything @Tigress has said. I will be thinking of you tomorrow.

If the GP thinks it something that needs more investigation you should be seen quite quick and usually a triple assessment of physical examination, mammogram/ultrasound and biopsy.

Take care :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

You are most welcome @sarah221. Statistically a high proportion of breast investigations turn out to be something other than breast cancer so you have certainly got the right attitude. I would also add that, for those of us who have had breast cancer, the survival rate is over 90% these days but the key thing is to be seen as quickly as possible. Good luck.

Thank you.i value the support given on sites like these. I joined one 5 years ago which helped me with my mum who had lung cancer and when it spread I found it so hard letting her go. I think because my nanna also had breast cancer it’s just put that small amount of fear in me. I’ll update tomorrow after I’ve spoken with my doctor. Again thank you for the support it much appreciated x

You should never believe you are overthinking you are just being cautious. Always best to get these things investigated.

Hi everyone
So I went to see my doctor today who had a look and said he thinks it could be an infection which could cause the line dimples too, I’m on tablets for two weeks but if it gets worse or doesn’t clear by then I’ve got to go back and he will refer me on to be checked properly. Fingers crossed xx

It’s reassuring that the GP didn’t immediately think it necessary to refer you. Good luck with the drugs Sarah, I hope they clear things up and this whole thing can be put behind you.

Please follow your instincts. We’ve had many get misdiagnosed. If you feel like something is still not right, ask for a diagnostic mammogram. Remember, it’s your body and no one else is going to take better care than YOU! Hopefully, all gets resolved. Please keep us posted.

Take care!
