Am I the only one who finds WIGS uncomfortable?

Hi everyone,

We’re all different aren’t we?
I love my two monofilament, lacecap wigs (from Trendco) and wear them all the time, from when I get up to going to bed (have even got into bed wearing them on a few occasions!) They have adjustable straps and so are very comfortable and I forget I’m wearing them. Sometimes I wear a stocking or net cap underneath but leave these off if it’s hot and the wigs don’t feel any warmer than my own hair did. I was a bit self conscious on first wearing them (three months ago) but after being complimented on my “new hair style” by people who didn’t know and having survived going out in high winds, I soon didn’t think twice. I love not having the bother of blowdrying every morning and am going to miss them when my own hair grows. A friend said to me the other day that it’s going to be strange when I have my hair back as my wigs look so realistic she’s convinced they are my own hair.

Just wondering:

Do any of the folk who wear wigs a *lot* also have to wear specs every day?

Hi everyone,

Yes, my reading glasses go on and off all day long. Distance glasses go on for driving and watching TV. Mine are comfortable under the wig but I’ve just tried them over the wig and that’s fine too. Never thought about under or over before!

I wear my sunglasses a lot with my wig, I can’t cope with bright or even not so bright sunlight at all so live in my sunglasses and my wig when I am put and about. I don’t find too many problems with the combination just have to remember not to push my glasses back on my head as I would usually do as it really shows I am wearing a wig if I do that.

I call my wig Slack Alice. I hate her passionately and I have only taken her out twice since I aquired her 4 months ago!
No matter what everyone says, I feel ugly in it. My fourteen year old daughter assures me I look younger with Slack - I suppose I should believe her because at fourteen you won’t be seen dead with a mother that looks like a freak!

I mastered scarves and must say, I feel more comfortable in them. I can change them every day to go with what I am wearing and also I can tie them differently too.

Yes, I wear reading glasses so they are on and off all day. Also wear sunglasses and perch them on top of my wig/head just as I would my own hair. My wig is a monofilament and the adjustment straps and skull like top are so realistic. I too have had many compiments on both my earlier wig and on this one. I was in a well known chemist shop a couple of months ago with my first wig on and was looking at hair dyes to do my own hair. the asistant was aghast that I was going to dye my ‘lovely hair’ much darker. She, of course, was referring to my 'lovely hair on my wig! LOL. J.

On the subject of wigs, is it possible to wear a wig when having your chemo? Went for my first pre-chemo today and the nurse said that a lot of women find they get to hot when having chemo so don’t wear a wig that day. I did notice that a lot of ladies were wearing scarves and hats!

The ladies wear wigs to have chemo at my place. I go commando but our chemo room has very cold air-con so my Buff beanie goes on quite quickly.

I wear a wig to have chemo but I have it at home so not sure that helps really.

Hi

I also hated my wig. Never wore it at all. Just wore caps and buffs, then as soon as hair started to cover my head just went like that. Found it much more comfy.

Hi there
I finished my chemo last April, but absolutely hated wearing the wig!

I had a very expensive mono filiment wig, with a fake scalp and was meant to be light and airy! I found it very itchy and hot, and had to ditch it come July (not sure how i lasted as long as it did with it). Then wore scarves when it was really hot, but as soon as there was some hair in sight, i ditched the lot!

I think wigs can take alot of getting used to, and they are not for everyone…but for me , the wig did the job of keeping my head warm in the dead of winter, and gave me some confidence when i was feeling and looking poop.

I love my wigs!! I bought two from the Rene Amore range and haven’t found them itchy or hot or uncomfy, and get a lot of compliments about how good my new hairstyle is (oops!) but certainly it’s a very individual thing…

I got my wig from House of Fraser on the NHS, which was kind of them, but I absolutely detest it. The bloody thing (called the Dead Cat, by the way) just will not stay on. I went back a couple of weeks later, and was sold a gel strip to help keep it on. It has helped a bit, but, as the wig lady told me, I don’t have much of a bump on the back on my head to hold it in place. As soon as I get hot, the gel strip slips up the back of my head and the Dead Cat goes with it. I’m constantly pulling it back down, which, as my work colleagues tell me, only draws attention to it. The first thing I do when I get home from work is rip it off my head.

Funnily enough, I have tried scarves, but wearing glasses is much easier with the wig on than the scarves. I find the arms of the glasses sit OK over the wig, but I have awful trouble getting the arms to go under the scarf and over my ears. As I have to take my glasses off to be able to talk to people without squinting, the wig is much easier.

I generally go without anything at home, unless I answer the doorbell. I keep a pre-knotted scarf by the door for slipping on when anyone calls (by the way, it’s an excellent way of getting rid of cold-callers - they don’t want to have anything to do with you!).

I never did wear my wig i hated it i went for wacky hats

Yeah the glasses arms a real pain, mine are very thick plastic arms not thin metal ones. I’ve got what I call “wide screen glasses” - the chunky geek chic type. Can’t afford to get new glasses as my eyes are so bad that the lenses alone cost about £260 (I have to get thin lenses etc as normally 7.2mm thick if not and too heavy)

The number one question I get from friends and others who know I wear wigs is how do I wear a wig when it is hot outside. I must admit wearing a wig in hot weather can be uncomfortable; however if you choose the right wig and practice good wig wearing techniques you will find that wearing a wig in hot weather is no sweat at all.

With the evolution of wigs and wig making wigs are not as heavy and bulky as they use to be. There are now wigs constructed to feel and look like natural hair; and yes even wigs that work especially well in hot weather.

an or Woman? Remember that good looks are only skin deep, but Ugly is all the way to the bone. Just joking. Generally hair is a youthful thing. People have a tendancy to want to stay young so they associate hair with it. There are many places that have hair transplanting, pills like propecia, and such. How did you find out? Did they tell you or you found out? They may feel uncomfortable without the wig (insecurity). Wearing a wig shows that they are concerned of their baldness. If it doesn’t bother you why should it matter? We all get older showing all the different signs of aging. Although balding is associated with age it is not exclusive to age. Many men and woman lose their hair and some at very young ages. A shaved head expresses more youth than the bald or horseshoe pattern. Many men are shaving their heads now. A shaved head makes many men look tough. Thats a plus. baldness is heartbreaking, but it’s part of life. They are making many leaps and bounds now and we may see a total “cure” in our lifetime. An article in a local paper once said, “Just because there is no chrome on the dome doesn’t mean theres no power under the hood.” In answer to your question, if it doesn’t bother you why worry about it. It’s still the same person and it’s what is in the heart that counts. Best wishes to both of you.
