Hi- been on tamoxifen since 2020 - shortly after taking it my periods stopped. I was taken off this drug in June this year by my consultant as kept getting constant rashes on my arms-they put me on Anastrozole - been on this since June & over the weekend i noticed slight bleeding & periods pains, sore boobs etc - seen my GP this morning who’s checked me out - said cervix looks ok but referring me to a gynacologist for checks- im worried that i may not be going through the menopause & that possibly the tamoxofen stopped them - my question is - should i be on the Anastrozole as i have read that shouldnt take if not in menopuase?
thank you

Hi stanstead_abbotts
Thanks for posting.
It’s understandable you are concerned about having some vaginal bleeding and wondering if you are not yet post-menopausal. As you say aromatase inhibitors like anastrozole are only prescribed in post-menopausal women whether this is a natural menopause or treatment induced. You don’t mention how old you are.
It’s good to see you have checked this out with your GP who is referring you to a gynaecologist. Do also contact your consultant to let them know about the symptoms you have developed. They can let you know whether you carry on with the anastrozole, swap back to the tamoxifen or if any other course of action is required.
It might help to know that some women are recommended to stop their hormone therapy for a while to see if this impacts on any side effects they are having so if you aren’t post-menopausal this short pause in therapy is not likely to have any impact on your situation. Again, your treatment team can provide information about this.
