Another poem I wrote about my mastectomy and implant

A poem I wrote after mastectomy and implant. You may have read my previous poem called Brave Face.

Cinnamon Bun

A cinnamon bun

Is firm but will squish

It’s sweet and it’s tasty

And very delish!

I took a cinnamon bun

On my trip to the hospital

It reminded me of something

Not expected at all

I showed it to the surgeon

He seemed a bit shocked

That his skill and his handiwork

Were now being mocked

See the cinnamon bun

Looks like after my op

With it’s pattern of scars

And no cherry on top!

I assured him I was glad

That he’d played his part

‘Cos my silicone implant

Now cushions my heart

I would have preferred

To keep the old thing

Or a bun with a cherry

With no dubious filling

But what I didn’t know

At the start of this thing

Such support would be shown

And the strength it would bring

So, a cinnamon bun

Is my symbol of strife

That in the end

Has given me life

Oh…, I laughed and cried at that one. Those symbols of strife and survival are exactly what I carry on each side of my chest wall
Great one Hilary

I don’t think I could have got through it all without humour. I used the cold cap for the chemo but on round 1 it sort of rode up and didn’t cool the crown of my head. We decided I would look like Friar Tuck, so I just abandoned it for the rest of the sessions. And then there was my “chemo head” muddling up the sachets for constipation with the electrolyte solutions to take after diarrhoea. My husband finally twigged after my seventh trip to the loo!! OMG we laughed at that one.

My friend in NZ, who was so ill, has recovered thank God. She just booked a trip to the UK in August so I’m looking forward to seeing her. Off for a run now in the hope we can do that park run together. She can only stagger around the block so far, but she does have 200+ park runs to her credit. Btw exercise seems to be the most powerful way to stave off cancer recurrence. Yup, life is never quite the same ‘afterwards’, but good nonetheless.

Happy healing

Hi Eily,

So funny - that’s a vision - Friar Tuck

I can’t wait to get back exercising - am doing the gentle basics but this heat is wiping me out!

Park run sounds like fun (and a challenge) - not sure there is one near me but will look into it - walking is always good for me.

I hope your friend can join you and keep adding to her achievements

Don’t know if you’re anywhere near Sheffield but there is a nice flat one at Millhouses park over there. I intend doing it some time as our daughter and grandchildren are there so we visit fairly often. Xxx

Found a couple near me so will definitely give it a go when I’m able - thanks

Mine is Rita , named after the cocktail Rita Hayworth and a Margarita. My existing boob is an Old Fashioned.
Everyone talks about Rita like she’s a real person

Love that!! Great idea to use a good ‘old fashioned’ cocktail as a nickname

That is so cool. I didn’t have mastectomy, just lumpectomy but I can still relate. You are talented. Xx
