Any prophylactic mastectomy women for a chat
Any prophylactic mastectomy women for a chat Hi, just want to see if there are any more prophylactic mastectomy women out there,
I am a 40 years of age, had prophylactic mastectomy due to fibrodenomas and cysts. Previous lumpectomy x 2 when I was 25, and then more and more ‘lumps and bumps’ appeared on both breasts. One gave concern of approx. 5.2cm on left breast, so was given mastectomy and reconstruction at the same time in 2001, with tissue expander, being inflated each breast with saline each month, but it didnt work, as there was a huge gap in the centre (cleavage area), and it looks like two tennis balls on my chest, very hard and not moving.
This was then replaced in 2003 with tear drop implants, again these caused ripples around the edge of the implant in the cleavage area. However they were better than the tissue expander.
Unfortunately on May 2004 I woke up one morning with excrutiating pain, like an elephant on my chest. I was admitted to hospital where they advised that I had infection and my implants would need to come off, but they tried antibiotics first, and this did calm it down for a bit, but a few months later, I got the same again, only this time, nothing was shifting it, so I was sent to see a plastic surgeon, who put me on the list for removal of implants, this was done in March 2005. He said that he wouldnt put anything in place, and would leave it to heal. I was given lightweight prosthesis to wear until the scar healed.
I then returned to the surgeon on August 2005, with severe pain, including nerve damage pain in my nipples, they were immediately removed that day. I am now happier that this has been done, although I still get treatment for nerve damage around the areas.
I am now wearing self adhesive prosthesis, and am really pleased with this, but cannot get bras to fit me, being a 32DD, although this is another story…
It would be good to talk to others in similar or same situations as me, and nice to chat about this.
I appreciate this. and hopefully speak soon.

Hi Carol I am sorry you have had so much trouble with your recon. I am not exactly in the same position as you but for years I had lots of benign lumps investigated, unfortunately eventually they did find I had wide spread DCIS.
So 2 years ago I had left mastectomy with ld recon. I had excellent results from recon, looks good and is very natural. But I have been having nerve pain and the recon has been very uncomfortable the whole time. Most of the time I can cope with it but occasionally it really gets me down.
I have been trying to find out what happens if they remove the implant/breast mound. Also what happens to the ld muscle that is at the front? Hope you don’t mind me asking!
Take care
