Any tips for dry scalp?

Hi everyone,

I am having chemo at the moment and may scalp is very dry.
Any tips to make it better?

Thanks

Ana

Hi,
This probably won’t help if you still have normal length hair (you don’t want to to over-agitate that because it seems to encourage fall-out), but I cut my long hair down to a cm before my first chemo last week and every day since then I have given my scalp a long firm finger-tip massage with a dollop of good ‘bio’ conditioner (no shampoo at all) in the shower, followed by a hard spray of our really icy Finnish water - it hurts more than the cold-cap, but feels fantastic afterwards. I’ve always had a slight tendency to scaly scalp but this treatment has dealt with that. I’m thinking of looking into the kinds of oils that women in India use on their gloriously thick, shiny hair. Thanks for reminding me.
Best of luck.

Ana

You could try good old olive oil - its what we use in hospital for babies with really bad cradle cap - it works wonders

Good Luck

Hi Ana,
i usually wash my scalp and thenrub neat baby oil over the scalp if it gets dry, also use it on body too after a shower or bath as my skin seems drier with the chemo
Best wishes
Sarah

Hi Ana,

I use Dr.Hauschka Neem hair oil. It isn’t cheap but is brilliant stuff! I lost my hair with chemo and now it is growing back I still use this oil everyday.

Hi Ana,

whilst on chemo I washed my head/hair with E45 dry scalp shampoo. Also, I used to slap on baby oil and massage it into my scalp.

All the best with the rest of your treatment,

Take care,

I bet neem oil would be great up here too. I’m in cumbria and we get horrid midges up here and they love the taste of me. Neem oil apparently scares them off. I’ll be getting some of that ASAP.

I washed my scalp with an Olay Daily Facial every day and sprayed on Body Shop Vitamin E mist night and morning. My head was like a baby’s bottom and smelled of rosewater.

I found i didnt need to buy expensive shampoos or creams and was adviced against any of the baby oils or shampoos infact they are full of chemicals.
Good old Almond oil worked a treat for my head. Its failry cheap from any health shop. When i attended the healthy living day course the aromatherapist was excellent. We have to becareful what oils we use during chemo but almond oil was fine.Infact i am thinking of buying some more as the hairdresser said my scalp is dry now 2yrs after chemo.

Hope whatever you decide it works for you

Hi, just my 2pence worth but I have a friend who has worked in skincare for years and she too advised against baby shampoo AND she advised against things like “Simple” which are not as bland and “kind” as the ads make out, she recommended an organic shampoo, or in my case as I have shaved my head to a grade zero she said I could try my facial moisturiser on my head as well as my face, but she stressed I should not overdo it with the moisturiser as that’s as bad as not using any at all.

I have to second almond oil, its organic, and does the trick…

I still have a bit of hair after 4 * FEC with cold cap and not washing it is working best for me at present, from 2 days before chemo dose for as long as I can manage.
