Anyone had a liver ablation?

My Onc is suggesting that I see a specialist at the hospital about having liver ablation on my liver mets. Anyone any experience of this technique and info about how it feels, success stories etc.

thanks, Fran

Hi Fran,

I posted about this some time ago. But I didn’t need it in the end because chemo has done the job on its only.

Two threads for you:

I have been having treatment for secondary liver ablation since January 2009 primary was April 2007 !!! I have had my share of ups and downs however now I feel better than I have in years and was told on Wednesday (I have weekly chemo of nevelbine ) that although I feel great my tumor markers are rising I dont understand how this can happen Last week I was on top of the world this week Ive never been lower has anyone else been in this situation Im so confused and cant stop crying Jo

Hi
I had liver ablation in Dec 2010 for liver secondaries diagnosed at initial diaggnosis as was liver than led to the breast diagnosis. I had chemo to shrink 7 cm tumour and then liver ablation which was very effective. It was clear on scan in march and hope still is but was told that many ladies are managed with liver ablation now and I had some pain after but no side effects compared to chemo.
I had done in London at London Bridge. Know Kings, UCL do.

Thanks for this advice “everyone” - really helpful and I’ll certainly read the previous thread with interest since there’s so much detail in it. So sorry to hear you are worried again Jo - it is so hard coping with uncertainty and possible failure of a treatment… can you contact a BCN to get some advice and ask to have things explained - have they offered an explanation or given ideas of further treatments?
It’s good to know that the ablation is effective for some people - not sure that my hospital is the best place to have it as my Onc said the liver specialist had a focus on ablation for colon secondaries in the liver so it does not sound as though he has much experience of it with breast cancer or else my Onc would know this. I only got this suggestion from my Onc when I started talking about Cyberknife and other treatments and she seemed to think she needed to respond with a suggestion of her own that my hospital could provide; she also did not feel her referral would bring forth a very prompt response from the liver specialist… I might consider going for a second opinion so it’s good to know about places that have done the treatments.

Hi

My onc has said he will make a referral for RFA for my liver met. I don’t think he was that keen on doing this as it won’t cure me cos I have bone mets. The met is small and on the edge of my liver so I think should be a good candidate for RFA.

My arguement for RFA on my liver is that it bone mets tend to progress a lot slower than the visceral ones.

Let me know how you get on.
