Anyone have experience of radiotherapy on breast implants?

I am struggling to understand the level of risk in having a (Braxon) implant post mastectomy, given that it is highly likely I will have radiotherapy.

During my last appointment with surgeon (NHS and post MTD meeting) he said the MRI showed my cancer as over a 4.7cm radius, therefore under the 5cm border after which guidelines suggest radiotherapy. We went next door with breast nurse to discuss reconstruction. During this meeting the radiologist came in, showed us more images and he drew a line showing 5.3. I saw the surgeon again to ask if this means radiotherapy now likely. Answer, yes. My research suggests radiotherapy increases the risk of capsular contraction and that the skin may tighten over the implant as a result.

He immediately said mastectomy, have follow up treatment then reconstruct when NHS list allows (3 1/2 years at present). But equally he said I could try the implant as the side effects of radiotherapy may not happen. Perhaps better to have one op, than two.

I am now confused, but would certainly prefer immediate reconstruction if possible. BUT if the risks of capsular contraction are high, this may change my mind.

I’m hoping other people may have had experience of radiotherapy on implants…and nurses, what information you have in this regard?

My op is on 5th Oct, I have to decide by Thurs 30th Sept. Thank you x

Hi @Pigaletto  - I had a mastectomy about 4 years ago with immediate reconstruction using an implant and Braxon sling, on top of the chest muscle (“pre-pectoral”). I then went on to have radiotherapy straight afterwards, and touch wood all is ok at the moment. Surgeons are reluctant to do implants before radiotherapy because of the risk of capsular contracture, as you say, but mine said this particular combination had a lower risk. I’m happy to discuss further if that helps at all.

I wish you all the very best for whichever option you choose and for your recovery. Evie xx
