Hi
Going for mastectomy in Norwich this Friday. Is anyone out there being treated in Norwich and if so can you tell me what the norm is? Have been told I may be able to go home the next day with drains in! Any tips for what to take in etc?
Thanks

Hi gillc
You may find it helpful to read the thread in undergoing treatment/surgery - ‘How soon after mastectomy can I see my kids/husband’
This thread has lots of information about what to take into hospital etc.
I hope you find this useful.

Hi Gill,
I’m from Norwich but had my mastectomy at the BUPA hospital through my husband’s job. I was kept in for a week but i know you’re not in that long at the N & N. I think it might depend on the drains that you’ll have in place. I’m assuming you’e not having a reconstruction at the same time.
Hope it goes well.

Hi Gill, I am not from Norwich, but I think each case is different anyway wherever you are. My advice would be don’t rush to go home before you are ready. Rest in hospital, take the painkillers, do the exercises and make friends on the ward.
As for what to take in, I was told to take button up pyjamas as they are easier to manage when people come round wanting to examine you. Also some light reading, or puzzle books or magazines. It is hard to concentrate on anything too complicated.
I am sure you will find it is not as bad as you expected when you are in there.
Best wishes Heidicat x
Ps This message didn’t send the first time I tried, so I have missed a bit out about my experience with the drains. Each hospital has it’s own rules anyway.
