Anyone Scalp cooling?

Just wondering what people are wearing (on their heads) on the trip home?

At the moment the weather’s not too cold, but my treatment will run through the winter, and at the moment I’m leaving the hospital with damp hair soaked in conditioner!

Depending on your choice a pre- tied turban, a scarf, ,peaked cap or woolly hat all work…Gok Wan has some easy to follow videos on YouTube from his time helping his good friend Fanny McPhee/ Ali with her turbans and Look Good Feel Better charity do on line tutorials too

Just remember to be gentle with your scalp and hair in between treatments so a wide tooth comb is useful. Tropic sell a lovely one

@Curlywurly1 Thank you, I’ve had my hair cut to just above shoulder and was thinking maybe something to tuck it into, so it’s not resting on my neck, but as you said I don’t want to put any tension on it.

I got a few of these - or put my hood up !

Hiya! Hope you are ok.

Thought I would just pop a note, I did the cold cap for 6 months and through the winter too for the last 3 months - bought so many woolly beanie hats and a few softer ones as well which helped a lot when you come out with freezing cold hair.

Nice and soft and don’t pull on your hair either, and easy to wash as the conditioner of course is still on too when you come out.

I also always have a heat pad while cold capping which just helps take the chill off a little bit - can lay it behind your back or on your legs. The hospital usually have them available.

I cut my hair beforehand too to the same length as you, and it easily tucks into a beanie hat without putting any pressure on the hair - those hats became my go to right up until summer when it was too hot!

@misskj Thank you. I wasn’t sure if the beanies would be long enough, to as you say tuck it in with out pulling. So that is nice to know, thank you.

Did you buy specific Chemo beanies or just generic ones? There are so many different options, and especially as I’m off work, I don’t want to buy lots to find they don’t work!

Did you have any that were satin lined?

Sorry to bombard you with so many questions!! Xx

@bryna no worries at all, and don’t be silly - ask as many questions as you want!

I actually bought both types, had so many woolly ones for when it was colder and lived in those for going out and to the hospital.

The softer chemo ones (cotton/bamboo I went with) I wore a few times at home as they are quite nice for bed as well and very soft to just have on if your scalp is itchy/sore as mine was a bit. And for me I just preferred to have a hat on, helped me to deal with it better.

I did buy satin pillowcases but didn’t use them much as cotton ones were still fine and didn’t tend to pull my hair either (plus with the night sweats etc from being thrown into full menopause, I preferred cotton)

My boyfriend used the opportunity to buy me a load of different wooly hats for Christmas too, so I ended up with a collection  sales are always good as well to get hats outside of winter to save a bit too as completely agree when not working you want to buy stuff which you need and will use.

Really hope you find a couple of good ones that are comfortable and warm and also comforting :pink_heart: xxx

@misskj thank you:heart:

Hi I used a scalp cooling system by Paxman for 12 Paclitaxel and it was relatively successful with thinning and two small patches above my ears. As they wet your hair and apply conditioner and the added cool from the cap my hair was quite damp. I used a skull cap that was made from cotton Tshirt material. I was autumn into winter and when it was colder I put a beanie on top. Some skull caps cane be bought in various sizes.

Lots of information here

Some workshops regarding haircare etc. would highly recommend the skin and makeup and hand and nails aswell. You also get some freebies. Can be done online or in person.

Jo runs this charity and recycles preloved and new items. I donated some items I didn’t use. Good way to save some money.

Take care and hope your treatment goes well. You are strong, you can do this.

@naughty_boob Thank you for all the info! I will have a look at the links now! I’ll be doing this until the end of January, if all goes as planned.

Thank you for your wishes, I’m glad the scalp cooling worked for you

Hi, I used the cold cap for my 8 chemo sessions between December and March. I used a leave in conditioner and just wore a regular woolly hat to and from each session. Hope all goes well.

Thank you @londongirl it’s emphasised so much to not use anything that will add tension to the hair, that you start to question everything!

I was told to brush or comb very gently once a day and wear a skull cap to bed to help prevent friction. Washed once a week after chemo/cold cap also to prevent further damage.
