Applying for job

Hi

I haven’t been working in a while, and I am wondering what should I put down on my CV to explain why I have been out of action.

Because “Due to medical reason” may seems either off-putting or too much work, perhaps.

Hiiii…… I’m probably no help but you could put I was signed off work due to on going medical treatment or just not mention it on cv as they actually don’t have any right in knowing our medical history unless need be for a specific job. We don’t actually have to tell them…… but if you feel like you want to explain it then keep it to a minimum on the cv (for example, took time away from work due to medical reasons) and then if they ask at the interview, just say what you feel comfortable talking about.

There’s no obligation to disclose a cancer history to a potential employer, or in your CV and you should decide how much to share based on your comfort level. However, if you do decide to share your diagnosis, you can try these tips:

  • Be prepared: If an interviewer asks about a gap in your work history, you can have a prepared explanation ready. You can mention personal issues that are now resolved, and then focus on your strengths and how you’re a good fit for the job.
  • Be clear about your readiness: Let the employer know that you’re ready to get back to work.
  • Focus on your strengths: Highlight the skills and strengths you have.
  • Consider reasonable adjustments: Your employer should consider making reasonable adjustments to your working arrangements, You should discuss and agree on these adjustments before they’re put in place and again talking to someone like Maggies, MacMillan, ACAS or the recruiter /agency supporting your job search before interviews stsrt would be helpful

It’s unlawful for an employer to discriminate against you because of your cancer diagnosis. You can look for job ads with the “positive about disabled people” and with UK laws on ewuality diversity and inclusion employer need to ensure they work with you to make your induction and probation as easy as possible

You are classed as disabled and that can take sometime for you to accept

I didn’t know that someone having cancer treatment is classed as disabled.

Oh yes, cancer is a disability under the Equality Act. It is important to know. You can also just put a “career break” into your CV, if you don’t feel like sharing too much during the interview.

Agree with all that @Curlywurly1 has quoted.

You are protected under the Equality Act 2010 and you are not obliged to say why you were not working. @tinatin ‘s career break is a good idea.

There is a charity www.workingwithcancer.co.uk that can advise aswell.
