Aromasin (Exemestane)

I have been taking Aromasin since the middle of July after 2 ½ years on Tamoxifen. I have tolerated both of them quite well, but lately have been having quite severe heartburn on and off.
I do have some mild heartburn now and again as I have a small hiatus hernia for which I have medication.
I take the Aromasin in the morning with my breakfast and was wondering if anyone else has noticed heartburn as a side effect while taking it. I was thinking of changing to taking it in the evening with my dinner or supper to see if it makes any difference. Any help or advice would be most appreciated

Thanks and take care

Hi Thistle,

I’ve been on aromasin for a while now and have certainly noticed heartburn. I have a repeat prescription for Lansoprazole, which I think is used to treat hiatus hernias too. This works for me but you do have to take it everyday and it takes a couple of days to get in your system.
I too take my tablet in the morning with breakfast.

Hi Thistle, I take Omeprazole for this pronblem and I am on Aromasin and have been for many years. I take it along with my other morning pills at breakfast time. It helps will the reflux/heartburn. Love Val (Scottishlass)

Thanks ladies . I take Lansaprazole as well. I take a low dose but the doctor had told me before that if the hiatus hernia symptoms flared up to take an extra capsule, so I am going to try that as well. I did not take my aromasin this morning and the heartburn did not seem quite so bad during the day. I took it after dinner tonight so will see how that goes. It helps to know that someone else has experienced heartburn as well.
May be worth paying a visit to my doctor as I have had Lansaprazole for a while and maybe too used to it and it is not quite so effective.
Thanks again and take care

Hi,
I changed from Arimidex to Aromasin about four months ago because of severe joint pain, weight gain etc. Around the time I changed I started to suffer from heartburn and occasionally I’d have a severe pain in my chest through to my back. At my regular check I mentioned this and was refered to a Gastro consultant and had to have a endoscopy. That showed mild changes in the oesophagus, possibly as a result of the tablets. I was presribed Omeprazole tablets which have really helped.
I also take the Aromasin tablet at night and have been getting on quite well apart from pains in my toes and balls of my feet!!
I’d talk to your GP about the heartburn.

Hello Ladies

Just to an update re the heartburn on Aromasin. It had eased off a bit but then started up again. Seemed to come and go, some days worse than others. I don’t know if it was what I was eating sometimes, chocolate seems to be one of the causes!

However, I went to see my GP and he has prescribed Omeprazole.
He checked to see if one of the symptoms was heartburn, indigestion etc. and it came up as one of the side effects.

Thanks for all your advice and help and I am glad I went to my GP. I have to try the Omeprazole for a month and let him know how it goes. Will let you know if it works for me.

Thanks again

Hi: Have just been changed from Arimidex to Aromasin (Monday), again because of joint pain in fingers, but also my Onc said that an eight year study completed last month shows it gives better long term protection. Anyone else heard this? Don’t know who did the study but will search on the web to see what I can find.
