Awaiting follow up appointment

I had a mammogram 2 weeks ago and was notified via text that I had a follow up appointment. A letter then followed saying I needed further investigations. I have checked on the NHS App and my results are there saying abnormal neoplasm. What does this mean? Follow up appointment is on Tuesday but worried by the info on my records.

Hi,
I’m sorry that you are having the stress of a recall on your routine mammogram. Having a recall causes understandably a lot of anxiety. A area on your mammogram requires further investigation and this is done in the breast clinic which is usually a one stop shop. You will probably have a further mammogram, an ultrasound and frequently a biopsy. You will be seen by a consultant breast surgeon and a breast care nurse. I would probably take someone with you as four ears are better than two.
Several years before I received my breast cancer diagnosis I was recalled back after a mammogram and it turned out I had a fibroadenoma ( which is a non cancerous tumour) and no treatment was needed.
I hope the area of concern on your mammogram turns out to be non cancerous but breast cancers found on mammogram are often caught early and have a really good prognosis.

Hi daffodil6,

Thanks for your post.

It is understandable that being recalled for further investigations following breast screening and reading further information on the NHS app has led you to feel a lot of worry and anxiety. We hear from many people who feel the same.

Further information about what your results mean can only be provided by the doctors, nurses and radiologists who are involved in your care. As @shade has explained, further tests are needed to clarify what the abnormal area is.
