Axillary node clearance 2

Hello

I’ve had a mastectomy with reconstruction and ANC just over 4 weeks ago. I’ve noticed in my armpit above the scar for the ANC a hard, large mass which I assume is scar tissue. There is also a lot of tightness in the armpit caused by this hard area and I’m struggling to get my affected arm by my head when standing or lying down. Is this amount of hardness in the armpit normal? I would say in length it is the whole length of the scar (about 4 - 5 inches) and about 4 cm in width, going upwards. Also, is there anything I can do to reduce this scar tissue and increase my mobility? I don’t have cording yet but am wondering if this is going to be a precursor to cording.

Many thanks
Jenny

Hi Jenny, I’m sure the nurses will answer but I’d say that for me it definitely took longer to recover from the alnd than my 3 wle. I had a lot of resistance to lifting my arm for many weeks, but 3 months down the line I have full mobility. Keep foing the exercises 4x a day, massage the area with moisturiser and apply a warm gel pad every now and then. It will improve. My wle scar is so thin and pale and its been opened up 3x! Yet my alnd scar is still bright purple and much thicker. Maybe thats just how they are? Good luck x

Hi emmeline1

Thank you for your post.

As @bluesatsuma says, it can take time for your body to recover following breast and axillary surgery. Recovery after surgery involves healing, both physically and emotionally, and the time this takes varies from person to person.

Swelling soon after surgery can be common and will usually settle over time. It’s a normal part of the healing process and should lessen within 6 to 8 weeks after your operation.

As you’ve noticed a hard large mass and tightness in your armpit, we would suggest you contact your treatment team or breast nurse as soon as possible to to have this checked. They should be able to advise you of the cause and of ways easing your symptoms.

It may be helpful to keep a diary of any symptoms you have and how it affects you so you can discuss with your team.
