Bad Core biopsy experience

Hi,
I had 5 stereotactic core biopsies done about a week ago: it was a very traumatic experience… I nearly hit the roof on the first one causing some surprise although the nurse was wonderful - I have never experience such pain, even now 9 days later I am still very sore and bruised, also that part of my breast feels slightly numb…?!?
The biopsy was done because a lot of clusters of minute calcification were spotted on the mammogram I had done at the breast clinic - I had been sent there because there was concern I might have Paget’s disease. But it was the result of the mammogram on my other breast that prompted the biopsy two days later?!?
I am very concerned that I am still very sore and bruised - I wander if anyone else has had a similar experience?
We go back to the clinic on Thursday (29/05/14) for the results. Really hoping that thus is the end and they haven’t found any sign of cancer.

Hi I had a doer biopsy in February which took about 2.5 hours and they took 24 pecs for biopsy, I did feel pain half way through and they had to top up the anaesthetic. I had bruising for few weeks and my boob felt empty. However it does get better, good luck for your results

Hi 1664Reg

welcome, sorry to hear you are having this trouble.

I have a problem with local anaesthetic,  it doesn’t really work, it was discovered when my GP removed a breast cyst years ago. It took loads of anaesthetic before he could start cutting and it started to wear off before he finished. But he had to keep going so that was an experience that I will never forget.

I had an op on my wrist and the same thing happened, my GP said it’s rare but even though I tell surgeons when I need to get stuff done they don’t seem to believe me.

when I got my biopsy, they said they wanted to take six. I didn’t feel much when the needle went in but boy did I feel it when he took the biopsy. Everyone was great but each one was agony. The doctor kept saying that he used loads more anaesthetic than usual and got another doctor in to help. She asked if I was ok but said my feet were curling when he took one so I was obviously feeling a lot of pain.

I just wanted to scream stop talking and get on with it. Eventually they decided to stop at four.

the burning sensation died down eventually and it was numb for a while. I was left with several red lines where it was done and some bruising.  It was still there when I went for my results a week later.

seems this is ‘normal’

good luck with your results,

take care

Good morning 1664reg

I don’t think your experience is that unusual. I had 9 core biopsies taken and it was very painful whilst being done and afterwards I felt like I had been kicked by a horse. The bruising was extensive and lasted for weeks. I also had a problem with bleeding during the procedure which did not help matters.

The pain and bruising will improve and for me it was the most painful part of my journey so far.

Good luck with your results next week.

Thank you all for taking the time to allay my fears. It is reasuring to know I am not alone in having an awful experience.
I will update with my results on Thursday

Great news, celebrate all weekend.

Thank you - we plan to celebrate as soon as work is out of the way ?
I shall keep you all in my prayers with a wish that someday this dreadful disease can become a thing of the past - Evie06 hope you get as good an outcome as I have been fortunate to have ?
