Best scar cream to use

Hey everybody, can someone advise on the best scar cream to use for breast scars after surgery, there too many to choose from if anyone has used any that actually reduce the visibility or fade the scar, I’m just one week post op yet so will need to apply it soon

Hi it must have healed before you put anything on it but bio oil is very good for scars all the best on your journey take care

Oh ok I do have some of that at home, thank you for responding, take care on your journey too x

Hi @sham, I wouldnt use anything quite yet but I use coconut oil in the morning and caster oil before bed. My mastectomy was 9 months ago and I only started applying oil some months afterwards when my skin felt dry. Love Tulip x

As someone has already said Bio oil is great for scars but I didn’t like the smell and changed to jojoba oil which I would definitely recommend - it has a similar chemical structure to the oil in our skin so especially good if like me you have sensitive skin . I also used it to help get the sticky residue left behind by the dressing off as that was making me itch. I didn’t put anything on my scars until I could see they were nicely healed . I switched to Aveeno daily moisturising lotion at some point after radiotherapy which I am still using all over my body but not sure if that helps with scars but mine are virtually invisible. Xx .

Hi @sham my surgeon after mastectomy said wait 4/6 weeks before applying any creams I agree some many out there I used Aveeno and baby farm moisturiser
Bio oil made me itchy for some reason it’s a case of trying which suits you must admit skin is looking much better taken a while , still get sore still under arm but think it’s where they removed my nodes
Hope this helps Xx

@sham : my plastic surgeon prescribed Bepanthen cream but told me that many other creams could be used, what is the most important is massaging the scar everyday. I did some physiotherapy few weeks after the surgery and the therapist showed me how to massage my scars (breast and armpit).

Oh that’s a great tip, I’ll definitely use these oils to see which I suit, and to take the tape off after I’ve healed I used bio when I was pregnant for stretch marks and I wasn’t sensitive to it, and thanks for letting me know I may get dry skin after radiotherapy. Hopefully I won’t need to go for chemotherapy if results come back all clear.
I’ve just had breast mamoplasty and lumpectomy and lymph node removal 7 days ago so I’m on the treatment plan, trying to stay positive and strong x

I used the Bio oil natural . But you can use any oil , the more natural the better , I’d say .

Hi Sham

Thanks for posting asking about scar creams.

Although others have posted with suggestions of what worked well for them, any emollient cream or oil is suitable to use.

You mention that you are one week post op. As @lilo1973 says the scar must be healed before you put anything on it. Your breast care nurse or treatment team should be able to tell you when you can start moisturising your scar to help with healing.
