Hi everyone,
I have bone mets primarily in my pelvis, hips and spine. I’ve been told these are blastic/sclerotic mets rather than the more common lytic mets or s mixture of the two. My onc says this type of met is less likely to fracture as it is basically an overgrown of bone as opposed to the lytic mets which cause holes in the bone. However, it appears that it is very hard to tell if this kind of met is getting better of worse.
Does anyone else have the same type of bone mets or, if not, just know anything about them.
Best wishes xxx
Yes waffles …
You’ve just reminded me what the oncologist said …I have them too as I had a hole in my femur and in my hip …
My oncologist does say that scans don’t tell her much …hence not having them so much. The scan shows new problems but existing they can’t tell if active or controlled.
I think now you have mentioned it …will need to Google a bit.

Hi Carolyn,
It sounds like your mets are lytic if you have holes in your bones but it also sounds like your kind of mets may not be much better than mine when it comes to telling if treatment is working.or not. xxx
Waffles
Just looked at the first notes I got from doc after scan …sclerotic bone Mets to hips and femur it says ?
It would be typical of me to have both !! Didn’t know there were different types !! When doc said sclerotic at the time thought it was something to do with multiple sclerosis! ! Doh how naive.

Hi Carolyn,
From what I have read, lytic bone mets when they heal appear as sclerotic (I think the words blastic and scletrotic mean exactly the same) It may mean that they have spotted healing mets on your scans which is very good news. It’s also possible you have a mixture of lytic and sclerotic/blastic. The majority of my mets appear to have been sclerotic from the start which means it is impossible to tell if they are getting better or not. Goodness, nothing with this disease is straightforward! xxx
Omg
I started to Google …got so confused …gave up …Just have to trust the experts to give us the right treatments and hope the bone juice does what it says on the tin too !!!

Good idea, Carolyn I think the same. It’s never a good idea to go googling. I always end up feeling worse after it. xxx
Hi Waffles I was originally told that I had osteolytic mets in my pelvis and osteoblastic in my skull, then onc seemed to have second thoughts that the goings on in my skull might not be SBC at all. But before that I asked whether denosumab for bone strengthening was suitable for osteoblastic mets which already involved a build up of bone. He said denosumab was OK but i didn’t really follow the reasoning why. Probably not much use to you as a reply. hope yours stay stable. B xx
Hi Bonariensis,
I did wonder about whether denosumab was the best treatment for blastic mets for the same reason but was assured by my onc that it was but he didn’t explain why. I might ask again. xxx
This thread has tickled my curiosity too. Given me a really difficult question to pose to the onc…what ype of bone mets have I got please?
Thanks waffles for this …don’t recall ever seeing this mentioned on the threads before so it’s a good topic of conversation and hopefully between all us " metsers" will get some info.

Dear Waffles
You have certainly given us something to question about our bone mets. I have just looked at my last whole body scan report and mine are osteoblastic through out the spine, ribs, pelvis and femurs and left tibia.
Thankyou for educateing on this subject
Love and (((hugs))) xxx
Hi everyone,
I read that men with prostate cancer generally have blastic bone mets. If you have breast cancer you are more likely to have lytic or mixed blastic/lytic. Doesn’t seem to make that much difference treatment wise what kind you have but it would be interesting to hear what your oncs say. xxx
Yes Waffles, so true! …Onk Onk!,
Hi ladies, i too didnt know there were different types of bone met but i thik when my onc told me i had them (he just dropped it casually into the conversation after it was confirmed i had pleral mets) i’m sure he said small sclerotic mets in spine and pelvis…i will lok back and see if it is any of my letters. Would ask him on wdnesday but it is scan reslts and am bracing myself for that, never mind anything else. X
Hi Stresshead,
Hope everything goes well for you on Wednesday. The waitng is just awful isn’t it
The type of bone mets not really a big deal for any of us as we all seem to get the same treatment for them regardless of the type. Best wishes xxx
Well tomorrow is D day. Will ask the onc what type of bone mets ive got.
