Blood transfusion to boost red blood cells

Hello ladies ! This is a shout out to everyone here on the forum
It is regarding my daughter, who has to have a blood transfusion today. Unfortunately things are going not too great over at the hospital, as they haven’t matched her blood yet… so they had to do another bloodyest - which can take up to 2 hours… my daughter also was told, that one bag( or is unit the right word to use ?!) was all she needed, now is aparently 2…so she pribably will have to come back for the 2nd unit, as all is delayed because of the blood matching issue. She has weekly chemo a mix of 1 and the following week a mix of 3…
My daughter also has OCD and having a blood transfusion- someone elses blood transferred into her vains / boody seriously freaks her out but shes a very strong young woman…
My worries are ( and i have not shared them with my daughter, as i dont want to feed more worries into her mind, which is on overdraft allready anyhow now) HOW safe are these blood transfusions ? Are there any side effects to it ? Do they help one situation but create a new issue ? I have to admit im super worried about this… getting some random persons blood… things have sadly gone serious wrong with blood before … also im worried that with so much to do and understaffing things are easier to get missed, or muddled up… and the day hasent started great for her already…
Of anyone could just give some imput on personal experience, or knowledge or anything else would be so very much appreciated!! THANK YOU, LADIES

Hi, sorry your daughter is having to go through this. I have had a blood transfusion after I had my son due to a large blood loss but not for chemotherapy so not the same situation but still needed to top up the red blood cells. It is very safe as the blood is screened throughly. It is a weird thing to get your head around, someone else’s blood in your body, but by topping up the red blood cells your daughter will be able to handle the chemo better. Hope she doesn’t have to wait too long. It’s the faffing about that makes everything worse isn’t it? X

Hello twinks77
Thank you so much for your fast response and for sharing your own experience !
Yes. I think that is definitely the one to get the head around… that some bood from a unknown person finds it way into your own bloodstream/ body. I think it would have helped, if someone of the damily could have given their blood to our daughter. I think that may would have set better with her OCD also…
Sending many greetings over to you… Thank You for responding

Is she in the uk ? If so, blood is given by kind volunteers to help those that need. Blood is screened fully and in the uk we have some of the strictest regulations on who can donate. Blood is a precious resource and not prescribed lightly, so if she has been prescribed a unit, she really will benefit from it. It is hard to wrap your head around, but if she views it as medicine to help her get better, that might be easier for her. I have hooked up many, many units during my time as a nurse, all without problems. The only problem we have is there is not enough of it. I had given 25 units by the time I was diagnosed. I can’t give anymore so I just nag all my friends and family to do so. I hope she gets on ok .

Hello edp
Thank you, so much, gor your reply and insight into the blood transfusion… is good to hear from other people !
Our daughter is a real trooper…she has an incredible approach to the whole scenario and she is so damn determined to rid herself of this damn beast and has focused totally on what she has and can do and like all you ladies, like my daughter have/ has to endure! I think there is this encredible strength and willpower set free… this determination to fight and a very fact thinking headset… its incredible and we- as a family -are overwhelmed by how she is approaching all this in her own strong and brave way… she knows also that she has no other choice… she has to… she is only 28 and was diagnosed in March this year…
And yes, she lives in the UK… which makes things far more difficult as we- her parents live in DK since 5 years now.
Im glad for the reassurance, that you could explain a bit more regarding the strict regulations aso… i just hope all will be good…
And i think so too… more people should give blood…i know both of my parents did…my Mum up till one or two years ago… i always wondered about it… but right now we are in tracking down our BRACA 1 gene as our daughter has also been diagnosed with that…unfortunately there are loads of breastcancer deaths on my fathers side… so we are waiting for our blood tests to be done but we have to talk to the genetic clinic first before yhey do the test her in DK… if i may have enherited the gene from my Dad, then i probably wont be able to give blood ?! Definitely will find out about it…
Sorry…i completely went of the blood transfusion topic now :grimacing:
Many greetings over to you , edp and thank you so much for sharing !
