I want to book a holiday after radiotherapy finishes
Havent had one this year as had chemotherapy all over the summer so we are desperate to get away
I cant go in between chemo and rads starting as only having a three week break between the two
How long can i leave it after rads before going away -i finish on 14th November -can i book a holiday early december?
Would appreciate any advice from anyone who has finished rads or has made plans to go away

My rads are scheduled to start in Nov to finish on 5th December. My aim is to head to see my sister in Oz for Xmas and New Year. Both my onc and BCN have said that it is a good idea for recuperation and have no issues with me flying that distance. The only thing i have to do is make sure my Herceptin dates are sorted and they have said I can delay one round by a week so I can have 3 weeks away.

So based on what I have been told, it seems there would be no problem with you going on holiday in December

Enjoy - you deserve it

Jools,

I went away for a long weekend to Budapest between chemo and rads. Also away towards the end of rads as my treatment had to be dragged out due to the (welcome) intervention of Christmas.

I don’t see why there should be any problem for you provided that you are sensible re skin and any possible tiredness because of rads.

It will be something to look forward to and much deserved.

Hi

I was told 4 weeks if going abroad as the skin can break down in this time and you have to have follow ups appointments after rads I was told, but your team should be able to advise you

Hi Jools

I have booked to go away 2 weeks after rads finishes as I need a treat at the end of all this treatment. I then go back to work the following week. I have just read Lucy’s comment about being told to wait 4 weeks I didn’t know this, but I guess that I will keep my skin out of the sun anyway (anything to avoid lymphodema!) I am fair skinned anyway so not a sun-worshipper I was more planning on sitting around in warm cafes drinking a lot and watching the world go by!

Hope you manage to sort out a holiday I’m sure you deserve a good one!

Hi Jools, i too had to cancel holiday in march due to having chemo. Due to visit my dad in spain, i hope to go end of sept rads end on 12th but like you am not sure how long to leave inbetween!!

I can’t wait to have a break before going back to work!! the kids and hubby need a break too. I will not be sitting in sun too much either, just to get away and see different scenery etc lots of ice cream and sangria would be most welcome!!

hope you have a great time when you eventually get there.

Hi

I start rads on the 19th Aug and due to finish them by 16th Sept. I have had a holiday booked since b4 dx and go on the 19th Sept. The hosp know where and when I am going and even scheduled rads to fit in before it. I know that I will have to cover up but that’s no problem.

My friend’s husband had 6+ weeks of rads which ended in March - he finished his treatment on the Wednesday and booked a long weekend in Barcelona leaving the Friday of the same week … he was told of course to keep the rads area covered but as his was stomach it was not a problem for him. His rads team and oncologist had no problem with this.

Ask your BCN or the rads team - they will be best to advise you.

I finished mine on a Friday and flew to Spain the following Monday with strict instructions re skin care.

Hi Mary,

Still trying to follow in your footsteps!

Where you tired after Rads? How did you feel on holiday, we can`t wait to get away as soon as poss after treatment, but have no idea how treatment it will affect things.

Hi Jan
Not as tired as I thought would be.Felt relaxed on hol, just had to keep covered up which was hard as it was really hot,and as I had rads to my neck area I had to wear a scarf, which was a bit uncomfortable at times.Docs new I was going and gave me strict instructions re covering up.My skin still broke down but used lots of cream.
Go for it you deserve it
