Booking a holiday post RT- looking for opinions

Not sure this is the best place to post as I’m wondering what to expect when the RT is finished. I’ve only had the 3rd of 20 and am absolutely fine so far, but I guess its early days. A few weeks back I booked cheap flights to Italy to go 10 days after RT is finished. Before I book accommodation I’m wondering what to expect. I know everybody is different - the therapist wouldn’t really commit because of that, - but just wondering if anyone out there has had the roughly the same number of rT treatments and been fine a couple of weeks after. I haven’t had chemo and had WLE’s only. I can afford to lose the flight fare but not much more, but I know if I wait till last minute I might not get the kind of rental I like. So any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Hi there

Like you I had 20 rads although mine followed chemo. I felt fine after the rads, certainly nothing like how I felt with the chemo. I few days in Italy sounds lovely and I would definitely go for it if I was you. I appreciate that everyone is different, however I would think that if you take things easy while you are away it will do you a lot of good.

Enjoy!!! J.

Hi Shell,

I do think that you ought to get advice on this from your Oncologist. I seen to remember being told not to travel abroad for 1 month after Rads. However, it is 2 years ago and I could be wrong but best to be certain before you lose any money. Would it be possible to change your flights to a later date if you need to?

I had 6 weeks of rads after chemo and I went to Spain for a week a few days after I finished rads. This was over 3 years ago so my recollection of who I asked about it is a bit hazy now but I do seem to remember that the radiographers wouldn’t commit themselves about whether it would be ok. I think that my oncologist was ok about it and I agree that it would be best to ask your oncologist because you won’t get travel insurance if you travel against medical advice. It was a lovely holiday, just what I needed at the time.
All the best

hello, i had 20 rads and when finished on the wednesday flew to Turkey on the Sat for a well earned break ,this was with the blessing of both my surgeon and oncologist, i was advised not to swim in the pool and make sure the area of the rads was well covered from the sun, i did have a little dip in the sea but was really really careful, we had a wonderful break and “was just what the doctor ordered” part way thru rads you should meet with the onc again they are the experts ask if they think it is possible for you.

best wishes

Hi, I had 25 doses, no chemo. I went on a 2 week holiday to Spain 2 months after rads finished. It was something nice to look forward to and i made sure i had plenty of suncream on though on the few occasions i was on the beach i put my sunhat over my boob! I was a bit tired but it’s worth it just to get a break.

Thanks ladies
Makes me feel optimistic that my cheapy Ryanair tickets may not go to waste. I’ll wait a week just to see how things progress. I don’t plan to be doing any sunbathing anyway, more sitting in shade with good book and sipping Chianti.

Go for it! I went on holiday to Spain a week after finishing rads, previous to that I’d had five months of chemotherapy. You can get total sunblock on prescription from you GP - I did and put it on my affected breast, just used my usual sunblock everywhere else. xx
